Someone help me tell this moron cedar chips and shavings are unsafe when used in small animal cages like he is advertising without proper space and ventilation. I've watched guinea pigs die of respiratory distress from cedar in cage pans under open wire cages that were in a building.

CL pet section should just go away... I calmly tell someone (without the name calling) that studies were done by laboratories to find the damage cedar can do without proper ventilation, that I've seen it kill, and that it should only be advertised for use in well ventilated areas or large open cages. In response I get first a sentence that makes no sense then I get called an idiot for saying the sentence makes no sense. Clearing up that misunderstanding (still makes no sense) I assure them I'm just trying to pass along information so less people will buy those cedar shavings and possibly harm indoor caged pets especially in aquariums. Then I get told I'm a rescue nut and should go sue walmart for selling them and that rabbits chew on trees in the wild. While I calmly repeated that cedar trees are safe because the wood is sealed on the outside and cedar posts are safe because of the lack of surface area and generally being used outside. Then the logistics of ventilation and volatile oil buildup, the scientific studies... Response "I've flagged your email" (all this time I am avoiding flagging his post because I know it is not against rules just not safe) followed by some swearing.

The scarier thing is I found a couple trying to adopt children over CL with a title of "are you pregnant?". That place is turning in to lunacy. I wish ebay classifieds was popular amongst more than just the shelters around here.

I imagine that there would be quite a 're-homing fee'. .....

Eh, for someone trying to adopt you tend to go wherever you can. I don't see craigslist being better or worse than the paper for that type of thing...same risk of nuts but for me, I wouldn't because there's too many scam artists out there.

My concern is that the poster may be the scammer- you've heard of the "baby rings" they bust sometimes...

If Cedar were NOT toxic, storage chests and closets would NOT be lined with cedar to repel and kill cloth eating insects!!!

I find the local papers far less insane. Nearly all ads are legit and the only scams are trying to get more money than something is worth.

I saw a second post yesterday of some woman with a long story of having pcos so she can't have her own children. She has no money for adoption or for a surrogate mother to carry a child so she would love to have one of yours. My husband thinks it's illegal to give a child to a nonrelative to care for without going through the proper channels for adoption but I don't know for sure. I do wonder how many of those posts are scams and what happens to the children if they are....

Actually adoption laws vary by state and there's nothing illegal about choosing to have someone else raise a baby that you give birth to and don't feel equipped to raise.
We did an "open adoption" almost 30 years ago before the internet. I spent LOTS of time @ the library looking up ob/gyn addresses to send my letters to. We were very fortunate and are now helping our daughter plan her wedding. She is inviting her birth family to celebrate with us.
