When I let my rabbits out to run I noticed the other day one chewed on an acorn then dropped it and moved on. I've never picked them up to feed them but it looked like they weren't too interested.

We don't have any acorns around here. You'd think they would eat them.

The study refers to Quercus pubescens, which is the Italian Oak native to southern Europe and southwest Asia. I don't know if acorns from other species are safe to feed - the acorns of Quercus robur, the Pedunculate Oak are poisonous for most animals [except pigs] and particularly horses, which are hind-gut fermenters like rabbits.

I couldn't find any research on acorns specifically for rabbits, but I do know that for people to eat them, the excess tannins need to be leached out. Oak is full of tannin in bark, leaves and nut, and is generally recommended not to be fed to rabbits. Now I realize that my rabbits will happily pick up an oak leaf and eat it, but a steady diet is not recommended (even though I wouldn't be surprised if someone here is doing just that). Have fed rabbits acorns at dose of one per rabbit, tasty candy and i haven't seen any problems from it.
