Does the strength of a solution affect how quickly pelts tan? How about how soft? I want softer leather for gloves, as the last time I tanned pelts with an alum/salt the leather was rather stiff, but I am not sure if I need to use something other than an alum/salt solution to make the pelts softer. Could it just be that I did not stretch the hides well enough?
Thanks!

Softness is mostly how much you work the hides as they dry after tanning. It takes a good bit of work to get really soft leather but you can we them and work them again to make them softer. For the softest, work non stop until dry, but that is a lot of work, best for two people and a couple of good movies you want to watch.
