Cute! Please update as this kit grows, I want to see what the color looks like when it's full grown (or at least 6 weeks).

Here are a couple of updated pictures. 4 weeks old today.

__________ Thu Sep 29, 2016 6:52 pm __________

Here is an update for this girl. She is 4 months 3 days old in these pictures. She hasn't grown as quickly as I'd like, however, she is the sweetest young doe I have had to date. She runs to the cage door for pets and doesn't mind being held. If she doesn't make it as a breeder, she's the first I think I'll try to find a pet home for her. Her fur is really good for a cross. It could use a bit more density but not bad at all. No extraneous guard hairs that I can find, what you see in the pic are a few loose hairs from molting.

She is long in the shoulder, but I think if I really had her poised right she would look a bit better. She's a cross after all not a show animal.

Wow! :p

She's gorgeous! And you're right, not bad at all for a cross... were there lots of breedings back to rex in the family tree (my thinking is more rex breedings = better fur density)? I really like this "squirrel", if I lived closer I'd definitely offer to give her a lovely home

Thank you!

The lines I used to mix in were meat mutts and I have no idea what was in their background. I do know that the 1/2 rex does I have have much thicker fur than the non-rex so there are some modifiers that rex carry that do help with fur density. There "may" have been some silverfox in my mutt lines as quite a few of my original kits had stand up fur and some of my non-rex does have better fur than your standard New Zealand. That probably helped with fur quality. I bred her dam back to her sire for this litter (her sire also her grandsire) and I plan to breed this girl back to a young pedigreed castor buck that is not related.

Short of producing better meat mutts, are you saving the pelts for tanning or something similar? Or do you just enjoy the look/feel of super dense fur? Similarly, are you trying for any specific colors in your program, or was this girl just a happy surprise? :)

I'm really enjoying this thread and watching the development of such a cute rabbit

I'm saving fur for tanning. In fact, you just reminded me I need to pick up some acid when I go to town today for a pickle. I need to clean out my freezer. Bow season starts tomorrow, and if I can't get a deer in the freezer because of hides I'm going to be in serious trouble with hubby.

I'm trying to get a good line of chinchilla animals with rex fur and my first rex buck was a lilac. It was just a happy accident that I was able to get a rex buck at all (most breeders where over 4 hrs away) so I just used him and have been working toward what I want with my mutts. So, this girl was part of working toward that goal. I'm not working toward type so much as trying to get good growth, and large litters with the rex fur and chinchilla color.

I was able to finally get a couple of pedigreed rex does this spring but was only able to get one litter before it got to hot to breed so I'm really excited for this fall. Of course, I bought a rex tri pair and then lost the buck. :(
