I went outside to take care of the rabbits and as I am walking, I notice that the one temporary bank of cages that we have on concrete blocks is now several feet AWAY from the blocks, roof pulled off, cage door open and Big Daddy out of the cage, laying dead on the ground a few feet from the cage... Looks like he had been grabbed and shaken to death. On top of that, Harry, my best young buck has one toe that is completely defleshed AND I think he has a spinal cord injury.    He has a *little* bit of movement in his legs, so I am hoping that he will recover. On top of THAT...My new Rex doe, Symphony, also has a defleshed toe and her nail is broken off of that same toe. Her outermost toe on her left back leg I think may be broken...   she also also has a spot on her forehead where the skin is torn up, very small, looks like from the edge of the feeder or something. I am so mad right now!!! Evidently there are a couple of stray pitbulls roaming the area. They tore up a neighbors sheep a couple nights ago and now this. I can see dirty marks on the cages where they pawed at them and the manure pile underneath is scattered around. I tended both of the injured rabbits and put them both in a double carrier and put them on the grooming table in the Maternity Ward. I just want to lay my head down and cry! My poor rabbits!

Oh, Shannon... how horrible! Your poor rabbits! And poor you, having to deal with it.

Irresponsible dog owners make me so angry.   There is no excuse for that kind of thing.

I hope you take pictures of the damage so you have some proof and contact the authorities. These dogs need to be permanently contained or put down. Bad enough when it is rabbits or sheep... It could be a child next time.

I don't know whose dogs they are and we don't have Animal Control where I live. They will be waited for and shot. I have children that play out side and my animals aren't chewtoys for some random violent dogs that someone dumped. I have NO tolerance for stray dogs on our property, not after those last ones killed our cats. *sigh* I feel so bad for my poor rabbits... What can I do for the toes except clean and put antibiotic ointment? Anything?

If there is no animal control, then SSS is about all you can do.

Lots of rabbits recover from skinned toes. I think keeping them clean and using an antibiotic ointment is about all you can do. It is shock that you need to watch for, I think. Keep them warm and quiet and maybe give them probiotics or electorlytes if you can.

That so sucks. I'm so sorry you lost Big Daddy. I'll be sending good vibes you can save the other two. I'm also hoping you can dispose of the dogs before they cause any more harm. Dogs like that don't need to be alive.

Oh, no! What a terrible tragedy! I am so sorry- now I want to lay my head down and cry. Poor Big Daddy.

Do you have a homeopathic medical kit? I have a complete kid's kit, and arnica is good for traumatic injury as well as fear, and aconite is recommended when one is fearful, or "frantic with pain, intolerant, thinks cannot recover". I have used these safely on our human and animal family. The tiny tablets dissolve quickly and have a pleasant flavor. We call it "Magic Medicine".

I hope Harry recovers, and that Symphony and her unborn treasures come through safely as well. Your poor beautiful babies!

I hope you get justice from those irresponsible pit owners. They need to be held accountable. Hubs wishes to remind you of the Golden SSS Rule.

Our hearts goes out to you, Shannon. The pups are also very sorry to hear the news.

Your Sistah,

Annette

It must have happened during the night, because Big Daddy was in full rigor when I found him. I will miss that guy...he was so sweet and had the nicest personality. He was also my chocolate carrier buck...hopefully he passed that on to one of his boys.....

I do have Probios, but no electrolytes. I will give them some and I am keeping them in a double carrier in the shed with the babies/moms for now. I really hope that Harry will recover....he is just the nicest little buck and he is out of my Sonic that I had to dispatch for pasteurella. *sigh*

You have the right plan for the dogs, they got to go. Look about the same time tomorrow.

I had pretty good luck keeping curious uninvited guest out of our rabbits while in the barn by nailing mouse traps along the wall below the cages.

Um, be VERY careful with those herbals
Aconite, monkshood is a DEADLY poison, little helps, little more sends you to the hospital in organ failure.
wrapping is a pain, I have done it with sorehocks, cleaned, disinfected and cut a cardboard 'sole' by the time I got out there for the evening change, she would have it most of the way off, even though I wrapped pretty high with the coban, oh, coban is a MUST HAVE for a rabbit kit, just seems to stick sooooo much better than tape.

You're right... I tried to wrap Nibbles' foot a few times, and finally gave up and just went with antibiotic ointment and no cover. :?

In homeopathy, one part aconite would be diluted with 100 parts dilutent, one part of that diluted again with another 100 parts dilutent, and on and on. The kids kit is 30X potency. I have treated cats with abscesses and given 1 tab Hepar Sulphate at hour intervals until improvement was noted with no ill effects and expedited healing. Just my personal experience.

To quote:

Three logarithmic potency scales are in regular use in homeopathy. Hahnemann created the centesimal or C scale, diluting a substance by a factor of 100 at each stage. The centesimal scale was favored by Hahnemann for most of his life. A 2C dilution requires a substance to be diluted to one part in one hundred, and then some of that diluted solution diluted by a further factor of one hundred. This works out to one part of the original substance in 10,000 parts of the solution.[58] A 6C dilution repeats this process six times, ending up with the original material diluted by a factor of 100−6=10−12 (one part in one trillion or 1/1,000,000,000,000). Higher dilutions follow the same pattern. In homeopathy, a solution that is more dilute is described as having a higher potency, and more dilute substances are considered by homeopaths to be stronger and deeper-acting remedies.[59] The end product is often so diluted that it is indistinguishable from the dilutant (pure water, sugar or alcohol).[9][60][61]

Hahnemann advocated 30C dilutions for most purposes (that is, dilution by a factor of 1060).[62]
