    Broken red NZ - finally!

At long last I have produced a broken red new zealand. This has taken several generations of careful crossing and culling between broken blacks and reds, and I often despaired of ever getting results. Red New Zealands are fairly rare in Ontario and I haven't seen or heard of any broken reds up...

    2011 meat chicks

This must be the week for chicks :) I picked up a dozen red broilers yesterday. Not much is cuter than a day old chick

    January kits

I had 5 does due today. Black NZ - 10 kits, Black NZ - 8 kits, Blue NZ - 11 kits (sadly, all were solid in spite of the fact she was bred to a broken black NZ -- I was really hoping for a broken blue :(), 1st time chocolate magpie Harlequin - 11 kits. Okay, 40 live kits from 4 does is...

    Pullet egg!!!!

:mbounce: Found my first egg from the new pullets yesterday. They were hatched May 1st, so they are less than 20 weeks old. That's the youngest I've ever seen start laying! I think I'm going to like these cuckoo marans :) Err... duh! Less than 23 weeks old. (Where did the summer go? :? )

    GMO-free rabbit feed

I have been enquiring into a GMO-free/Identity Preserved Grain based pellet for rabbits. Jones Feed Mill in Wroxeter, Ontario has a mill that is strictly for GMO-free IP grain and my feed supplier is looking into the cost and feasability of getting a custom milled feed. Jones Feed already has...

    Feed Issues

For those who don't remember, I had some strange behavior (not eating) and deaths in my rabbits back in May. The post describing the incident is here: http://rabbittalk.com/lucky-save-t944.html About 3 weeks ago, the exact same thing began to happen again -- adult rabbits refusing to touch...

    Priorities...

For those of you who don't know, I have a "community cage" that is 8 feet long with a wooden hutch on one end which normally houses a buck and doe together. I let them do their thing, raise the kits and remove the kits a couple of days before the next litter is due. Sunshine (the doe) had 2...

    SCF has visited my chickens!!

I posted somewhere else about how one of my three Golden Laced Wyandotte pullets has turned out to be a cockeral. Well, I'm fairly certain that one of only TWO Partridge Chantecler pullets is also a cockeral. He's got the long, narrow saddle feathers that the Wyandotte fellow has rather than...

    More good news

    Lucky save!

So, this is rather a long story, but it has a mostly happy ending... A little over 2 weeks ago, 7 of my does were showing full blown GI stasis. It started with my broken black NZ (that took BOV at meaford) and over the course of the week, 6 other does followed. The does ranged in age from 3...

    Meat Breeders - caution

I have received an unusually high number of the "you are disgusting filth for eating bunnies and I hope you rot in hell" emails this past week. These people have been directed to my website by a "friend". Definitely won't be doing any more sales at the house. Just wanted to caution others to...

Too many kits - not enough does!

Last week I had 4 litters kindle: 15, 8, 11 and 10. I fostered 3 from the litter of 15 to the doe who had 8. This morning the doe with 10 was looking really rough. She hadn't touched her food or water and was sort of weaving back and forth in the cage. I syringed some Acid-Pak 4-way...

    Anyone in Ottawa, Ontario area?

Is anyone in the Ottawa area interested in selling 5-7 lb rabbits (pre-killed, frozen) to a reptile owner? If so, PM me and I'll send you the details. Shipping 60 lbs of rabbit that far is just not economical :(

    Broken NZ update

Well my first broken litter is 5 weeks old now. We're down to three since one got dragged out of the nestbox and froze :( So far I'm really pleased with the markings. I think they are very nicely balanced. The largest is a doe and will probably be a keeper. She has a few stray white hairs...

    New Zealand litter

I'm very pleased to announce that my very first Broken New Zealand litter arrived on New Year's. :clap2: All six kits are doing well -- 4 broken blacks and 2 blacks. Yes, I know pics are required, but it's soooo cold out there  Maybe later. Sadly, the singleton kit from Monday did...
