Selection of foundation animals - beyond the breed

I am looking at meat rabbits qualities and have started my own herd. I chose animals that were from a line with qualities that most meat or commercial producers want: good mothering instincts, higher litter numbers, milk production for feeding and raising kits, etc. But, rarely do I hear...

    Small Animal Auction

I stumbled onto some great deals today. The kids and I have made it a Saturday summer ritual to attend an open air swap every week. We picked up a flat of tomato plants for $8.00 and found some other good deals also. But, I noticed that across the street there was a livestock auction. Now...

    Bamboo for cover?

Thanks guys! I have a ton of extra 3 and 5 gallon buckets around here - maybe I can use those to plant them in and then just set them in a prepared hole. That way the roots are contained, but they should still have plenty of room in the buckets to get nice and bushy of shade and cover. Awesome!

    Bamboo for cover?

I was thinking of transplanting some Cold hardy bamboo for cover and shade in a new colony I am helping my oldest son to set up. My question is if anyone knows if Bamboo is safe? If they nibble at it Would it be harmful?

Colony made from an old above ground pool.....

No, I am quite sure that I measured correctly. In the pics of the inside of the pool the dog crates that are making up the main burrows are the extra large ones made of hard plastic; the holes we dug for those were about 5 feet long and 3 feet across to make sure that they fit into it well -...

Colony made from an old above ground pool.....

I thought the area of a circle is = to pi X's the radius squared? Since the diameter is 35 feet then the radius is 17.5 This would be 3.14 X (17.5 X 17.5) I am getting about 960 sq feet of area......

Colony made from an old above ground pool.....

The pool liner is long gone. It was ripped in too many places and ended up being removed in sections. We do plan to make an area for feed (pellets always available and in the winter hay/straw) that will have sheet metal roof and place that in the center. We have been piling brush in there...

Colony made from an old above ground pool.....

My son is almost done with school for the year. He has been here on the weekends and seen my colony for the rabbits that I converted from my old open air chicken coop. Mine does have a roof and is dry. We have an old above ground pool that is about 35 ft in diameter. Lots of space (about 950...

    feeding rabbits strictly greens

I also agree with Akane's statement about goats - mine will eat grass but appreciate nearly any kind of broad leafed weed more and seem to prefer them to grass of any kind. Brush too. Sometimes they have surprised me with what they eat. There have been times I was so proud of myself for...

What Breed Did You Choose and Why?

I have mutt rabbits. That being said, they are a NZ and Cali cross. Some colored NZ thrown in as well as the whites. LOVE them - I still get alot of color and markings variety and they dress out really well. I also have 2 Lion head does, no bucks yet, just for fun - I do not plan to eat them.

    feeding rabbits strictly greens

I keep pellets available as well - even though I feed plenty of greens that they hardly ever touch them. I don't go through much feed. But, I like the fact that if I am gone for the day and can't provide fresh forage my rabbits will not go hungry. And, come winter I plan to provide hay and...

Baby bump???? UPDATE - she is having them!!!!!

Well last night she started pulling hair. So I put her in a cage by herself with a nestbox that is still inside the colony where the others can see her - hope I won't have trouble reintegrating her. So far I have two babies and she's not done and is staying in her nestbox with them....will...

Baby bump???? UPDATE - she is having them!!!!!

Kinda what I thought - I had posted on another thread when I got these two girls - that I thought they were older than 8-9 weeks. They were still caged with litter mates when I picked them up - I kinda thought it was likely or at least possible that they were bred as the litter had at least 2...
