    Digging

Mission impossible. Only wire will prevent their escape. Sorry.

    Pleasantly surprised

4 pounds at 7 weeks??? I would be doing backflips and calling the newspaper! You need to go commercial! Wow! Now, go back and weigh them with a working scale and report back. :D

    A few nest box questions.

The best nest boxes are drop nest boxes. All wire, but easily wrapped with cardboard (from the outside). Warm and dry. Babies never get out of the nest until they're old enough. Search for drop nest boxes and you'll see some pics on here.

NONE of my does are willing...is it my feed?

I've had major breeding problems in the past with NZ mixes and Cali mixes, Champagnes and Americans. They were so bad at times that I had to keep twice as many does as expected, simply to keep something in the pipeline. And I was using nothing but TS feed (Producers Pride). Now, I have all...

    Tough kits

Ditto that. My barn is not really draft free but they are completely sheltered from direct wind and of course, they are dry. Bermuda grass hay is absolutely the best for winter nesting and they've got plenty of it. Females all do their part very well re: fur pulliing. I can't say enough...

Are there meat differences in different domestic breeds?

I can tell the difference between wild and domestic rabbit quite easily. However, I don't think I could ever determine any difference in different breeds. I've raised 5 different types and can't say one was better or worse than the others, tastewise. There are probably others who have a more...

    Tough kits

I used to avoid deep winter litters but now I try to keep my does in regular production (I've had some bad and very frustrating experiences with other does getting "off cycle" in the past). However, these commercial does from down South are unbelievable re: production, durability and growth...

    Tough kits

Let me preface this post by saying I don't have any animal rights tendencies nor even a mild case of "bambi syndrome". In fact, I'm usually angered when I see news stories that say everyone should remember to bring their pets inside at night due to severely low temps. I've always maintained...

Meat mutts - what have I got here?

I have little to no idea about colors and terminology but that's a great looking bunch. I really miss those surprising and enjoyable litters with multiple colors. :( Since I converted to the commercial line, all I see is white rabbits. Dull and boring but at least they produce and convert...

    Heat sterility?

Bred 2 of my NZWs (both still young) last month. It's been 90+ degrees here throughout most of August. One of the does started making an attempt at a nest but never kindled. The other doe dropped 13 but 2 died within 3 days. The other 11 look good. The doe that successfully mated was bred...

    This is interesting...

My dad went through WWII the hard way; basically a nomad in his homeland of Germany with his mother and sister. They would sneak into fields at night and try to find usuable crops for food. Sometimes they were shot at by the farmer. He also told of eating boiled dandelion for meals and wished...

    Planting potatoes

In reality, our entire commercial food chain is almost just as close to failure as the potato market. It seems as if all of our food production eggs are in one basket. If the basket slips, there goes the eggs. Add to that the fact that the government wants to remove all forms of self...

Guinea pigs! Er, hogs, I mean... Guinea HOGS.

Absolutely no slicing, no banding. Takes 2 people. It's pretty easy but do them sooner rather than later. It's easier on the piglet and you. there are plenty of vids on youtube that are good sources. Just make sure your incision is vertical rather than horizontal. The cut must be able to...

    canning [bottling] rabbit "bone in"

Here's a comment from an earlier post that mentions bone in canning .... Re: New unit Post Number:#9 Postby MamaSheepdog » Wed Sep 09, 2015 9:34 am Zinnia wrote: I want to can rabbit! Bone in or out? This time I canned it both ways... first I quartered all of the rabbits. The ribs were...

    canning [bottling] rabbit "bone in"

I have no experience with canned whole rabbit but like you, I would have guessed that it would be as good or better than w/o bone. We can tons of rabbit meat but always deboned, simply because one can pack so much more boneless meat in a jar. It's extra work but the results are great. I've...

    Planting potatoes

I often have a few potatoes show up each season that were left in the ground from the previous year (by accident; just don't always find all the potatoes under every plant). I've never really let them grow because they're usually in the way of where I want to plant something else. But I've...

Question for the Pokemon Go people...

Makes sense to me. I've often told people that I was racing against to go slower because it would actually make them faster .... but none of them believed me! :o And the more money you spend, the richer you'll be (according to our gubmint anyway).
