    5 week weights

It's likely its the stock. We tried to buy good stock, but either we suck at searching or no one seems to have them. I suppose they are mutts but they are primarily new zealands - that's what they look like. Our first breeding pair was sold as simply new zealands. They are clearly a mix of...

    5 week weights

Bumping this thread since it is relevant to my interests... :) We've had a few rounds of litters now and the best we got was an average litter weight of just under 4 pounds at 12 weeks. That particular litter ate a TON of pellets, we couldn't keep their feeder full. Right now we feed 100%...

    New arrivals

Yeah one of the black ones is a runt. Probably the one you pointed out. The doe is a California-NZ mix. The buck is a BEW mutt of some kind. We get a wide variety of colors from him. Edit: this is only the doe's second litter. Her first one was a little small at 6, but she fostered an...

    New arrivals

We have actually tried the frozen bottles idea, but ALL of our rabbits chew holes in them!

    New arrivals

Today we welcomed a litter of 12 (!) new little ones into the world! Momma is exhausted. It's been extremely hot here lately, so we brought them inside shortly after - and mom was going crazy trying to figure out what we did with her babies. We gave them back later in the evening when it...

    "Dead rabbit" picture thread

We have a new doe, Pepper, and when I put her on her back in my lap and scritch her nose she "dies" every time. :) She'd probably stay like that all day if I let her, lazy bum.

    Kit born with gimpy leg

I don't think this is a problem, and almost feel like it doesn't even merit a new topic, but I wanted to double check and I guess ask if this is semi-common. We had a kit born with a deformed leg that turns inwards. He/she is also the runt. It is jointed, and it doesn't appear to cause any...

Holland Lop "should" of had babies today

Try gently putting her on the ground, get her nice and relaxed, then put your hands underneath her belly and feel her tummy. You should feel little kicks at this point. My wife loves feeling those, it reminds her of when she was pregnant.

    5 week weights

We weighed our 5 week olds today and they averaged about 1 pound 3 oz. So they are underperforming what most of you are reporting. They have been fed pure 16% pellets so far but we finally found a good supplier of alfalfa hay so recently we've been free-feeding them that too. Hopefully that...

    Is it mastitis?

Thank you, this makes the most sense and is very helpful. Do you think it is OK to rebreed her with the assumption that we will not be breeding any of her offspring? Would it aggravate the condition? I hate to remove her because she raised her litter very well.

    Is it mastitis?

That thought had occurred to me, but obviously that isn't normal - do you know what causes that? and/or how to fix?

    Is it mastitis?

Posting an update. The one teat that was clogged is now fine. The other "hidden" teat is now visible but the gland underneath is still very hard. When we massage it and squeeze the lump, a very thick, sticky pus-like substance comes out. Resembled silly string as it came out. It doesn't...

Could you help me with the sex of this one

Girl is what I thought of too so I have nothing to add. :)

First time rabbit moms, any tips?

If anyone is interested, here are ~3 week old pics from today of the chinchilla crosses. It's a little early to tell for sure but it looks like there are 2 does and a buck. We will probably keep at least one doe. Then my wife brought up selling the buck. Are they worth a lot?

Cervical Dislocation; do they bleed out?

Have an odd question on this, and my google-fu is failing me. What is it about cervical dislocation specifically that kills the rabbit? Like, what is it about breaking the neck that kills? It seems like the cord would still be attached to the brain and therefore they would still be "alive" in...

    Getting sentimental...

I processed our first rabbits yesterday. It was a little tougher than I thought it would be. I didn't get emotional or anything, I just keep having these second thoughts. Obviously I know that the meat I buy in the store was also alive once, but it's still hard for me to get past the fact...

    "Dead rabbit" picture thread

We find "dead" kits quite often. But put your hand in there and they spring back to life. :) Here's the most recent:

First time rabbit moms, any tips?

That may explain things. He's thrown all kinds of weird colors. We have a couple of juvies that look like silverfoxes from him, and then this litter also from him has the 3 wannabe chinchillas. But mostly he throws REW's. It will be interesting to see what they grow up to be.

First time rabbit moms, any tips?

You might have to explain that one a bit more in depth to me. :) I don't understand much about rabbit heritage traits.
