Are chickens easier and cheaper than rabbits?

I really love the complimentary combo of heritage chickens and rabbits. I've been doing that since 2012. Below is my opinion of the things I like the best of each animal... The rabbit advantage is that they produce: 1. a lean carcass that grows very fast and breaks down easily into meal...

    Packaging rabbit meat

I break up and sort packages by cuts and the quantity I like. Eg. 2 or 4 back legs in a pack or 4 or 6 front legs, etc. I always remove the shin bone (tibia/fibula) and knee cap before packing. Just my preference. Sometimes I will fully debone the back legs which allows for quicker prep and...

When to harvest rex rabbits for meat, and when is best for fur?

Personally I would butcher when young less than12 wk. 8 to 9 weeks is excellent. You can save furs from these young ones. They start to molt out of the juv coat around 10 to 12 weeks, so you may get hair slippage. These pelts are still fine to tan and learn on They won't be the best. But hey...

    Stuffed Rabbit

Yeah I am envious of that guy! I do much of the same re: processing. Grind belly flaps once I have several pounds, front legs for soups/stews. I have deboned the saddles before and but I tend to just chop them in half (cross wise). My kids (4 and 2 yo) prefer everything deboned/ground...

    Stuffed Rabbit

Neat! I have wanted to try doing this too. I've seen the videos I think you are talking about. The guy who debones a large rabbit in several minutes... The only deboning I usually do is the hind legs. High meat to bone ratio makes it seem worthwhile. Maybe I'll try stuffing the hind legs...

    Beginner using Alum method... Questions

Hi all, I've been tanning/curing rabbit hides for a few years. But ive only been using a salt-acid pickle. Never tried alum. Q1: I prefer dry hides too. I don't soak before freezing, but probably doesn't affect things. I like to pull the case skin of the rabbit until it is only barely attached...

    Rabbit skin blanket

i didn't take any progress pics. Sorry.. But see http://www.primitiveways.com/rabbit_skin_blanket.html This is essentially how I made this blanket. There is very little info online regarding making these blankets. There are also a few different methods of constructing the blanket (weaving vs...

    Rabbit skin blanket

Just finished weaving a rabbit skin blanket. Probably 50 (or so) American Chinchilla skins from mostly juniors. Anyway, I am just very excited about it and had to show it off. I also attached some homemade walnut wood buttons to two of the corners so it can be worn as a robe. I could stare at it...

Watering system PVC schedule#40 pics. Beginning to end.

hi - I just made an auto watering system for my rabbitry. I've had a few issues with it so far. A few of my dewdrop valves randomly leak. I figure debris in the pipe might be the problem. One night I had the entire water reservoir drain because of this. The valves are pointed at a 45 degree...

Rabbit (and 1 duck) liver pate

looks delicious! I just had some rabbit pate on my sandwich for lunch! My only suggestions are to add some tyme and a few bay leaves to the pate as you cook it. It's really good! Also I use the kidneys in the pate too...

    My first... Anything today!!

Nice Job! I did my first batch this year too. It gets more efficient and better the more you do it too. Sounds like you made the cervical dislocation. When you pull, you feel some resistence for a split second and then "cluck", the neck dislocates from the skull. At this point, it won't feel a...
