The bad part about coming home from camping

Oh my gosh, you should see the unpacking I get to do... and then to REPACK because we're headed to the camp again next weekend. But the good news is we might be buying a large OLD camper!! So I should be able to leave some of the camp gear there. And I'm in search of hammocks! The pine trees...

    Another addition to the menagerie

At Easter my iguana, Miss Natalie, passed away. I did NOT want another iguana, they are SOOOOO hard to take care of. So, today I was at the humane society, looking for a budgie. No budgies. But in the tiniest aquarium there was a baby iguana surrounded by rotten food. No lights. And NO idea...

    Question on rhubarb

So, I was able to obtain a crown of rhubarb last year (new folks moved into the house, mowed over the plant I'd been harvesting from for a year), roughly 5 years old. I quartered it and transplanted into my gardens. I harvested nothing as it grew so little after being moved. I had a look at them...

    not moving :(

Well, I've been waiting on a posting mesage since Dec to tell us we are moving. Hubby got a mesage yesturday... same base, different building. I'm feeling a little ripped off right now, this means I don't get my homestead this year. :(

    silkie rooster

I just had to share... I was out to the horse barn to visit my silkie chickens, and got a little snuggle time in with my rooster. But when I put him back down, he hopped around and followed me until I scooped him back up :) I can't wait to get my own farm so I can have him back. He's so...

I learn something everytime hubby goes away

So, since my DH is in the military I needed something to occupy me while he's away... I took to learning something totally new, no matter how odd. I took up ceramics for the length of a tour. I did 6 months of belly dancing. I used the internet to learn all about weather patterns, hurricanes...

What was perfect about your Christmas?

Moneys been really tight, so I took up couponing... and learned a lot in the past few months. It's been an amazing year. I went home for Christmas, stayed at my MIL's farm. They somewhat adopted hubby's highschool buddy almost 25 years ago, as he came from an abusive situation. They (we) are...

Love my colony! I have 6 new years babies :)

I just did the evening feed, and while poking around to find out what my White NZ kindled last week while I was away (very full nest box, I wouldn't take them out for a proper count but it looks like more than 10, all solid coloured orange, white and agouti), I took a peek in the next nest...

    the un-official house hunting trip

I'm spending Christmas in my family's home town in the Annapolis Valley,NS. Since we found we may be posted here I figured I'd kill some time looking at houses on the internet, and a few days ago hubby and I were bored and had a run around to see the top 3 choices. #1 is an old house (just under...

dropped off my silkies today, but I have some good news

I live in town, so having a rooster was not a good thing. I've tried to keep him quiet, but it wasn't working. I finally heard his racket as I stood outside my house Friday. Hmmm. NOT good. So I finally dropped him off at the horse barn I do a little vollunteer work at. While getting them...

    the long awaited MEETING

So, the big bosses scheduled DH for a 1 hour long meeting... he then went into panic mode, as they normally say what they have to say when they want info or you happen to be a target for whatever crap is being slung. Thankfully SIL pointed out that IF DH had been "in crap" he'd have faced their...

is calf manna available in Ontario?

Does anyone here in Canada use calf manna? Or is there another product for use on rabbits? The 3 feed stores I contacted today don't even know what the product is :( They offered me milk chow 20/16 instead :( I didn't buy it.

Help! What to pay the pet sitter

I'm going away for 8 days and will need a sitter for all my pets... what would you say is fair pay to have someone stop by twice a day to feed and water a colony of 5 adult rabbits and 20 kits, 4 quail... 2 dogs, 2 lizards, 2 silkies, a fish and a budgie. There may be 2 indoor cages that need...

    7 kits this morning!

That flemmish doe who had escaped the colony for almost a week was caught JUST in time. She kindled this morning, 7 healthy looking ones, mostly dark. Here's hoping she's a good mom... this is her first time :)

    a question about ears

The buck I picked up today has one good straight ear standing right up, and the other completely down like a lop, the ears are good shape for a NZ, not huge like a lop. Could the ear be damaged or might he be of mixed blood (NZ and lop)? He's being quarentined in the house... for a month at least.

    another rough week is gone

Wheew, thank goodness that one is over. Not only did I lose a doe, I lost all of the orphans and fosters because I have 2 or 3 plants in the backyard that caused some major issues. I knew potatoe plants are trouble, but they were staying away from that corner... however, I now believe they...

    white hair everywhere!

So I put one of my girls back out in the colony. She'd been in the house getting penicilan shots for the past week. I went out at noon to let everybunny out to graze, and found fur everywhere! OMG! I JUST finished fixing her up! I caught her and flipped her to inspect. A bit of blood... I began...

Ack! My rooster might need to be put down!

I let my oldest son put the silkies away last night (they spend their days loose in the yard to play and forage), and he put them in the shed, but not right into their cage. This morning I found him (the rooster, not my son) in the bunny pee corner! And the skin over his breast has broken open...

    Bananas anyone?

I have a temporary resident in my kitchen. One of my new does has an abcess on her lip and is receiving treatment this week. She is on a rather bland diet of wheat, barley and hay, so I offered her a piece of banana yesturday, and now she ferociously searches my hands for more when I come near...

Need some help with sterilizing a colony set up

Last night one of Queen BB's daughters kindled... due to being in a colony I didn't know for sure that she was pregnant until Tuesday. There are many places to use as nests (boxes, tunels and solid walled cages), and lots of fresh hay was layed out for her... I thought I had a few more days...
