Our first litter of New Zealand Reds

It took 3 generations to get to a new all red New Zealand line. Well, one albino is in there, but he's got the genes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-wzFG5qg6s

Which commercial feed for best growth

Am I the only one that has a problem with feeding regular rabbit pellets that are treated with fertilizer and are most likely GMO? Modesto Milling certified organic rabbit pellets is what I use. Plus by heavily supplementing with self-sprouted fodder with organic grains from Azure Standard I...

    Rabbit zinger?

I'd love to see if you can pull it off. I did buy one myself and I'm happy that I have it, but I do feel that the zinger is crazy expensive. It really should be a $50-$75 device. Please keep us posted on how you make out. Here is a video of me using the zinger...

how to shut a rooster up

I just posted a youtube video from my rooster wearing a collar. It's at http://backyardboogi.com/news.html. You can hear him and judge for yourself. He still crows just at a highly reduced volume. He is not in pain or uncomfortable. He dust-bathes, mates, breaks up fights among the hens and he...

Motion-Activated Sprinkler to keep Predators away.

Hi folks, I recently purchased a motion-activated sprinkler to keep raccoons out of my veggie-pad at night. I also now used it to keep a bob-cat at bay during the day when I let my rabbits out on the lawn. I posted a youtube video of the setup here: http://www.backyardboogi.com. Keeping my...

Do offspring from NZ REW/Californian always have black spots

Hey all, Anyone a pro with genetics? I have bred a REW New Zealand doe with a Californian Buck and then I rebred her with a REW New Zealand Buck on the same day. Now I have a litter of 5 Californian looking kids (black noses, ears, feet) and 3 albinos. Is it possible that they are all offspring...

    Labels and shrink bags

I invested in the FoodSaver GameSaver Deluxe Vacuum Sealing Kit for $120 and it does the trick reliably. I buy freezer rolls on ebay for about $20 for a 50foot roll which will last me for a few dozen rabbits or chickens. You cut pieces from that roll to the size you need. The thing works fast...

Bred broken NZ Red with Californian - Anyone know genetics?

I bred a broken Red New Zealand doe to a Californian buck. The result were 9 solids: 5 whites (with the californian black ears and nose) and 4 blacks. I was surprised to see that none of them were broken. Wouldn't statistically 50% have to be broken? Did I just get unlucky or is the combination...

Day 28, Patience is not my best virtue!

I just had a doe give delayed birth. On day 33 she finally had three babies, one of them a still born. I'm just glad she made it through. She's been a good mom so far with 8-10 kits per litter. The remaining two are huge now with all that extra milk. :)

Cooked Rabbit has raw smell when prepared in the rotisserie

That sounds like a great idea. I will give that a try. I'd love to hear how your "rotisserie-ing" works out. s.

Cooked Rabbit has raw smell when prepared in the rotisserie

Does anyone have this problem? Every time I do a rabbit roast in the rotisserie, it comes out with an off-putting raw meat smell. Doesn't matter if I put it in bake or convection mode, nor if it is marinated, wrapped in aluminum foil or just plain. I also make sure that the internal temperature...

What to do with the extra parts from rabbit processing?

I keep the heart, liver and kidneys and fry them up. I use the blood and head and toss it in the worm bin (Black Soldier Fly Larvae) which I harvest every day and feed to the chickens as protein booster. I've never done it, but you can certainly tan the fur.

    New Zealands

a few months ago I finally got a red doe and a broken red doe to get some color in the herd. The broken red is huge and she has a great disposition, loves to be cuddled. The red is a bit smaller and is shy, but my daughter is picking her up every day and starting to warm up.

    disposal Q

Actually, there is not that much smell really. They can completely go through a couple pounds of meat in one day. So no time for rotting or any anaerobic processes. s.
