The house was kind of filled with rabbits everywhere for the night as we brought home a bunch of extras to take to swap today. I had the cage frame done but lost the staple gun and the door panel is in the garage so I pieced together the sides of the new cage for the young ones out of baby gates, wire shelving, and hexagon mesh. There were a few escapes that the dogs helped return to the cage (unharmed but occasionally a bit slobbery). 3 half checkered giants, 3 mini rex, 1 young red, and 1 tort.

Decided to cull a champagne doe and threw her in the cage normally used for quarantine of small pet rabbits.

A junior red buck stayed in a carrier with one divider removed

I did not bring home more rabbits. I did end up coming home with the 2 castor mini rex (sold a black doe) and a checkered giant cross and then these

They are not rabbits. They do not count. Plus I still had $30 left when I was done. Actual cages for them are in process. My hand started to cramp from melting ventilation holes in the plastic storage containers and I still have to get that staple gun to cover the holes in mesh. The black dwarf hamster is a young adult female who hasn't been handled but she doesn't bite. Just a little defensive about unknown fingers in her space and then she goes back to what she was doing. Mostly eating her box since she doesn't want to explore any yet. The spotted is a young male who is all over the place and couldn't get a clear pic. Mostly friendly. He sat around on my hand looking things over for probably 15mins before he got nibbly about being held that long and we boxed him up. Eventually when cages are done they will be introduced.

My husband found out why you always handle dwarf hamsters before buying from an unknown source or petstore. You stick your finger out there and the insane ones latch on like pitbulls. Sometimes you have to pull them off. Those can rarely be tamed back down. I've tried many times. I'm not sure if it's genetics or environment but once they go bad it's rare to get them to recover. The others may threaten to bite or grab your finger with their paws but they then turn away after a minute. Those can be tamed. The ones that sniff or ignore you can usually be made exceedingly friendly and will hang off the doors waiting for treats or to be let out. It takes a little blood loss to determine which ones are which though.

The grey gerbil is the boldest adult female dove I could find who seems to have a good attitude. She bounced right up to nose the dogs for her first look at dogs. I haven't decided who to pair her with. I need to flip over some of my youngsters to tell gender. I'd prefer it to be the diluted spotted yellow fox (not sure the proper name for that) or the diluted (golden) argente but I also have some non dilutes and a bunch of whites that I need to breed before I'll know what they are. Gerbils have PEW, REW, and something else with a strong dilute gene to make solid whites and mine could be any of the 3. I'm hoping PEW cause that includes the g gene that I want. No way to tell until they have offspring from the correct pairings. Since gerbils are best mated for life and may die of loneliness if separated or kill any other mates you attempt to put with the female a lot of thought has to go in to pairings.

HAHA! Sounds just like me! I wish we had "Swaps" like that around here. Who knows what I would bring home.
I really want a gerbil now! Adorable! :P

Try these little buggers

Really hard to get pictures of even when still blind and wiggling about the cage. We could power the world by baby gerbil.

I LOVE that female gerbil! That picture of her is too cute, she looks really inquisitive and friendly.
