We have a bred doe that is due in 5 days and it seems that she has fur mites. She has a spot on her neck missing fur and a spot on each side missing fur. Is there any treatment that is safe to give her?
So your saying I could use mineral oil in my pergoo rabbit and my male and kit rabbits ? It been stressing I notice all them shaking there head and biteing there furr also Bella is 4 weeks pregnant the kits are four weeks old my male is a 5 year old rabbitThe standard non pesticide treatment for ear mites is a drop or two of mineral oil rubbed inside, It is quite effective and of No problem to the kits. Ear mites are like aphids... a few today, a real mess 5 days from now. The other cure is a bit of 5% Sevin dust sprinkled in the ear. This is a topical pesticide, would not in any way contact the kits, and would not hurt them if it did.
I do not advise using Ivomec for ear mites. It is great stuff, and will work, but it is like giving a child a weeks dose of antibiotics for a brier scratch. It is not necessary, it is not as safe as a topical solution, and it contributes to the nematodes adapting immune strains. The lack of viability of once very effective antibiotics, is almost completely due to farmers using them when not needed. The same is happening to Ivomec, which is predominately a worm medicine. Many sheep worms have already adapted to the point where it has lost much of it's effectiveness.
