McAfee isn't used because it's good. It's put on computers because of good marketing (sometimes borderline illegal such as the fake virus hits) and the discounts it gives to computer companies selling new machines and large companies needing to protect lots of machines. The fact it's so common only makes it more of a target. If you want to infect a whole bunch of computers that will do the most damage do you go after the programs being used on individual systems here and there which are more secure or do you make it with the intent of getting around the most commonly used antivirus program spread across the computers of businesses?
