:bunnyhop: Good day bunny friends.

I breed New Zealand and Cali cross rabbits. Usually 1 or 2 out of the litter have longer fur - no quite angora length but definitely what I would call fuzzy. Also, I often get 1 or 2 smooth coats - similar to rex.

Is this a genetic trait or something odd?

From what I've heard, a lot of meat rabbits that are also harvested for their pelts had angoras bred into their lines to improve coat density. Because it takes a double recessive to get the longer wool of an angora, the long wool doesn't show up on the initial cross but all the offspring would have at least one recessive for the long 'wool' coat. However, an angora coat has different types of fibers in it, from guard hair, awn, undercoat, etc., and if the meat rabbit doesn't have the full complement of hair types in their longer coat, frequently all it will do is mat.
