After having to reluctantly give up on my rabbitry a few years ago due to lifestyle changes, I'm finally getting back into the field! I couldn't be happier and I'm excited to get a new mini rex herd started.

I recently scored a 16 hole cage bank on CL and have been busy getting it tidied up. Each hole is 16" X 30", all in good condition. The catch tray needed some serious TLC. I decided to paint the entire unit black (because well, I like for everything I own to be black, lol. However, primarily I feel black gives it a good, clean look). I'll be getting the feeders and hay racks installed tomorrow.

Here are some pics of before and after I painted the unit:

Nice!! I also like the clean look of the black, I almost painted my indoor hutch black but seeing as it will be spending the majority of time in the dark closet, something so dark just wouldn't be the greatest idea. "Where are the rabbits?" .. "Dunno, can't see them."

Welcome back! Or in my case, "Hello and great to meetcha!"

Update: Nest boxes

We decided to go with the outside hanging nest boxes by Pointer Hill. We couldn't be happier with them.

We painted them black (of course) and the rabbits seem noticeably happier as opposed to having the standard boxes in the cage.

The kits love them! And momma rabbits seem glad for the extra cage space.

I highly recommend these boxes. Pointer Hill was super fast with their processing and shipping. These boxes were only $22 each and came with an extra wire door and hinges if you so chose to have the option to close the box off from the doe. The boxes also have a convenient peaking lid and removable bottom.

I LOVE YOUR SET-UP!!

I have 4 wooden "hang on the outside of the cage" nest boxes that I use in the winter and I think they are great!! Mama rabbits look much more relaxed with the kits "hidden" and not in the cage.

My space isn't climate controlled, so in the summer I use the open topped boxes in the cage. the "bird house" boxes trap too much heat and the mamas don't want to go in and feed the babies.... (in my experience)

I also just ordered tags for my cages!!! I'm excited to get everyone tagged!!

nice set-up!

even your handle is black...
how frequently are you having to replace the bedding under the cages?

We completely clean and sanitize every 4-7 days. I just take a broom and brush all of the bedding into a trash can, then spray a disinfectant on the liner, dry, and lastly sprinkle with diatomaceous earth/wood shavings.

Wow that is really black. Do your rabbits try to chew the paint off the wire? I had an old cage I wanted to paint once, but I didn't want them to eat paint...

We haven't had any issues with the rabbits chewing the paint off the wire. The rustoleum has lasted well in both safety and efficiency, tried and true :)
