I don't think it's true either way, but I thought the saying was that they face a certain direction when they sleep?

I've never heard either of these sayings but the cows around here eat and sleep every which way. Maybe that is why I've never heard these saying because there are more cows than people in these parts and debunking is as simple as walking outside.

Okay so I did a google search now
And what? What even is this?
These are like, rather credible sources too

What?! I saw this question and was like, "Psh, no." But now apparently I was ignorant to assume I knew that cows didn't care about the magnetic pull of the poles. I'll need to research more before I dismiss these things so easily! My apologies A7736100!

The more I learn the more I realize I don't know jack

My first though was this has to be fake. I have lived right next door to cow pastures for almost my entire life, and never seen a correlations. So first, I went to google earth and pulled a location that I knew had cows and found them on the image. As I suspected, no N-S alignment. If anything they were aligned E-W. But I know one picture does not a study make, so, I google a bit more. The study that made such a stir has failed to be replicated.

Despite the reasons for assuming it is the magnetic field I would still bet weather, including the sun, first. They are more sensitive to minor changes and while landscape and some less predictable storms will alter things sometimes there is still a fairly steady effect in each area and the same path of the sun. There may be an unknown benefit to exposure, sensing oncoming changes, or being prepared to react with changes by facing the same direction despite different areas. I believe some low level personal tests have been run with electricity and not yet proven a reaction to magnetic effect but the scale is small to remove a lot of variables.
