Well, let's start with the actual cover version of "Sound of silence" by Disturbed, I really like that song. And as far as I can understand the lyrics (there is a lot more space for interpretation if it's not your mother tounge, I guess), it could be just about the current Smombie invasion.

Not understanding the lyrics makes other songs great, like Sail from Alwonation.

that's interesting because I just had a friend share that song by Disturbed with me the other day. it's not something I would have listened to otherwise. but its very good.

I also like 'Sail' by Awolnation. depending on how you look at it and interpret it the song could be quite dark or more of a cathartic, self explaining. Since I don't know any other languages and don't really listen to music not in English I am not sure what you mean about not understanding the lyrics.

A couple songs that I really find meaningful would be:
Kris Krisofferson 'Closer to the bone' and 'In the news'
Jason Mraz 'Details in the fabric'
Jack Johnson 'The news'
Blue October 'It's just me' and 'Hate me'

"Hate me" is actually like a song version of a letter to his mom. it isn't very obvious in the song lyrics but with the video helps a lot. its about how he hated himself so much and went through depression and attempted suicide and alcoholism... all this stuff and she stood by him and pulled him through all this stuff. he blamed himself for putting her through it all. he wanted her to just let him to whatever fate he thought he had and to go be happy without him. because she couldn't really have that happy life and be going after him and pulling him back up. very deep.

The first song that popped into my head was Two Sparrows in a Hurricane:

She's fifteen and he's barely driving a car
She's got his ring and he's got the keys to her heart
It's just matter of time
They'll spread their wings and fly

[CHORUS:]
two sparrows in a hurri-cane
Trying to find their way
With a head full of dreams
and faith that can move anything
They've heard it's all uphill
But all they know is how they feel
The world says they'll never make it, love says they will

DH and I started dating a week after I turned 15 and he was 16 1/2... we dated long distance for a few years (3 hours, but when you can't drive, it seemed like so much further!) and no one thought we would make it. My parents gave us 6 weeks, I think his 6 months? We grew together rather than apart, and he was even the one to help baptize me nearly 12 years ago! We made it far better than anyone anticipated, and to this day, have yet to have a fight. Actually, today is our 11 year anniversary ;) (17 years total) Do we agree on everything? No, but we have never raised our voices... which, given my fiery past, is pretty crazy! We kept hearing "just wait" phrases:

Just wait until he goes to college
Just wait until you're engaged
Just wait until you're married
Just wait until you have kids
Just wait....

Two songs that are most powerful to me are any version of "Old Rugged Cross" and "Danny Boy". Also "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes. They all remind me of my Dad and can reduce me to tears easily.

My most powerful songs are many by Supertramp. During a particularly dark period in my life in my late teens I seemed to gravitate towards Supertramp and many of their songs can transport me back to that time in an instant.

For me, yeah, "Sound of Silence" and "Silent Running", both the covers (Disturbed) (Hidden Citizens) and the originals (Simon and Garfunkel) (Mike + the Mechanics), are on the list because I know what the lyrics describe, and it's very close to modern "culture", but there are others that mean more to me. Since Fuge camp, I've learned to listen to precisely what my favorite songs say, and many are even more powerful than I thought. If you want to hear them, I might be able to get videos, but here they are written down...

Citizen Way -- "When I'm With You"

These are the things that I need to pray
'Cause I can't find peace any other way;
I'm a mess underneath and I'm just too scared to show it

When everything's not fine, and I'm not okay
It's nice to know I can come this way

When I'm with You
I feel the real me finally breaking through
It's all because of You, Jesus
Anytime, anywhere, any heartache
I'm never too much for You to take
There's only love, there's only grace
When I'm with You

Nobody knows me like You do
No need for walls, You see right through
Every hurt, every scar, every secret; You just love me

(Pre-chorus and chorus)

I'm breathing in
I'm innocent
It's like my heart's on fire again
I'm not afraid
I'm not ashamed
I'm safe when I am with You

And so I'm here just as I am
Bruised or broken; I don't have to pretend

(Chorus + Bridge)

That song played in the car on the way back, and I realized it was describing me. At camp, we were asked to pray for a few minutes, just about anything, nothing in particular. When I did, my mind went blank, so I started singing this song I knew just below a whisper. The full meaning of the words hit me like a train, and I found myself in tears as I realized just how wonderful the words I was singing really were. This is the song...

Jason Ingram -- "How Deep is Your Love"

Oh, Lord, You search me and know me
You know when I sit and when I rise
Oh, Lord, can nothing escape You?
You know my thoughts from afar

How deep is Your love
That You gave Your Son
That I might know You!
How deep is Your love
That You would rescue me
And make me holy!

Well, there you have it. The theme of the camp was Unashamed, and I've learned a lot from that. It's hard to shine in a world that doesn't like you, but it's easier when you have friends who care about you and a God who holds you in the palm of His hand. :)

And, just to make you laugh, I admit, I wrote all that down from memory! Now you know about my musical geekiness!

I'll play, but it shows my age.
Jack In The Green, by Jethro Tull, 1977

Have you seen Jack-In-The-Green?
With his long tail hanging down.
He quietly sits under every tree ---
in the folds of his velvet gown.
He drinks from the empty acorn cup
the dew that dawn sweetly bestows.
And taps his cane upon the ground ---
signals the snowdrops it's time to grow.

It's no fun being Jack-In-The-Green ---
no place to dance, no time for song.
He wears the colours of the summer soldier ---
carries the green flag all the winter long.

Jack, do you never sleep ---
does the green still run deep in your heart?
Or will these changing times,
motorways, powerlines,
keep us apart?
Well, I don't think so ---
I saw some grass growing through the pavements today.

The rowan, the oak and the holly tree
are the charges left for you to groom.
Each blade of grass whispers Jack-In-The-Green.
Oh Jack, please help me through my winter's night.
And we are the berries on the holly tree.
Oh, the mistlethrush is coming.
Jack, put out the light!

I think the reason this song caught my attention the first time I read the lyrics, was because it brought back childhood memories of a neighbor's large yard. It was full of garden gnomes, but they weren't readily visible. You had to look for them... Under a bush... behind a rock. Like they didn't want to be noticed. Just like I imagined a hidden society (If they had been real.) would act. It was a big secret, kept between gnomedom and a little boy.
The Bensons were a really cool, older couple, and good neighbors.
Also, there have been documentaries on TV about what would happen to the earth if humans suddenly disappeared...
" I saw some grass growing through the pavements today."
While some will claim that us humans can control things... "Man caused" this and that... I find comfort in the belief that we are nothing compared to the power of nature.
Don't mow your lawn for a couple of months and see what happens. ;)

Hey, look! There he is!

I am a big fan of Twenty One Pilots, because listening to a lot of lyrics, most songs I heard were cool but didn't mean anything, but for me Twenty One Pilots lyrics differ. I first heard their song Stressed Out, and then started listening to the rest of their music. It sounds really cool, you can't really confine their music to one genre, and the lyrics mean something. I will just put a few lyrics from several songs.

From Stressed Out

Wish we could turn back time
To the good old days
When our mama sang us to sleep
But now we're stressed out

Used to play pretend
Give each other different names
Then we'd build a rocket ship and fly far away
Used to dream of outer space
Now they're laughing at our face
Saying "wake up, you need to make money"

From Car Radio

I ponder of something great
My lungs will fill and then deflate
They fill with fire, exhale desire
I know it's dire, my time today
I have these thoughts
So often I ought
To replace that slot
With what I once bought
'Cause somebody stole
My car radio
And now I just sit in silence

Sometimes quiet is violent
I find it hard to hide it
My pride is no longer inside
It's on my sleeve, my skin will scream
Reminding me of who I killed inside my dream
I hate this car that I'm driving there's no hiding for me
I'm forced to deal with what I feel
There is no distraction to mask what is real

I ponder of something terrifying
'Cause this time there's no sound to hide behind
I find over the course of our human existence
One thing consists of consistence
And it's that we're all battling fear
Oh dear, I don't know if we know why we're here
Oh my, too deep, please stop thinking
I liked it better when my car had sound

There are things we can do
But from the things that work there are only two
And from the two that we choose to do
Peace will win, and fear will lose
There's faith, and there's sleep
We need to pick one, please
Because, faith is to be awake
And to be awake is for us to think
And for us to think is to be alive
And I will try with every rhyme
To come across like I am dying
To let you know you need to try to think

From Holding on to You

Lean with it, rock with it
When we gonna stop with it
Lyrics that mean nothing
We were gifted with thought
Is it time to move our feet
To an introspective beat
It's not the speakers that bump hard
It's our hearts that make the beat

From Ride

I'd die for you
That's easy to say
We have a list of people that we would take
A bullet for them
A bullet for you
A bullet for everybody in this room
But I don't seem to see many bullets coming through, many bullets coming through
Metaphorically I'm the man
But literally I don't know what I'd do

I'd live for you
And that's hard to do
Even harder to say when you know it's not true
Even harder to write when you know that tonight
There are people back home which are talking to you
But then you ignore them, still
All these questions they're for real
Like who would you live for, who would die for, and would you ever kill

Their lyrics might seem dark, but they are very thought provoking.

Lol! Actually I just wrote all of these lyrics from memory too!

Thanks for the lyrics, most of them go unnoticed like listening to french songs, now and then I get a single word now and then, but not often I get what the song is actually about.

Here, well, many consider "Dear Mr. President" a romantic song, nobody really listens to the lyrics. Actually, thats a good thing, you can enjoy good music and can ignore the stupid, flat, or in this case irrelevant lyrics. Many songs got translated and they are just aweful.

I really do like cover versions of Johnny Cash ( and some of his songs) like Hurt, Bridge over Troubled Water etc. better than the original. In fact, I even really like some cover versions of Marylin Manson.

And I like many songs of the Sisters of Mercy. And Nirvana. That shows my age, doesn't it?

This song is my spirit animal lol jk:
Watch out for my Body Rolls ;)
I was walking through the forest of Moccasin breath
When I saw a troll boy wearing tight pants
I want to own them
But can you even dance in those pants?
"Watch me, woman!"
They made him move like a vessel of shimmy
All sweet and tender like a tiny baby kitty
I need to get some!
Put my body in them!
Then I will rule the land!
5, 6, 7, 8
Is that an Angel Baby?
No! That's his dance moves!
Yes!
Watch my lady honey grooves!
Feed me lots of Jamba Juice!
Call me lady tiger, but I never eat my young
No, no, no
My legs in those pants, a dream!
When I would move, I'd scream
Watch out for my body rolls!
Watch out for my body rolls!
High kicks!
High kicks!
This is how we do it!
Yes!
Watch out for my body rolls!
Watch out for my body rolls!
High kicks!
High kicks!

I have a moment, so I'll add to this. The artist is Aurora Aksnes, a pretty recent discovery for me. I have never had an artist go from first impressions to among my all time favourites so fast before. She's 19, Norwegian, and currently doing a big international tour.

The first one I'll link is titled "Running with the Wolves", and it's a good song to get a taste of her work. She describes it as being about our need to occasionally cast off the technology and societal responsibilities in life, and to let our minds and hearts get back to something much more basic. I think it's a much needed message these days.

Another great version of it here, for those who prefer a bit more accompaniment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=By-sBq2uk2c

My current favourite, and one that strikes a chord for me personally is a cover of an Oasis song, which in turn, iirc, is an adaption of a poem by someone else. In any case, it's just phenomenal what Aurora has done with it.

Personally I prefer her live performances so much, especially the ones with just Martin on guitar.

Another great song and performance here. The song Runaway is really beautiful. She wrote it and another on her album at just 11 years old, went back and wrote the music for them at 14-15. The second song in the set is something very different. Many won't like it, but I think considering the extremely difficult subject matter, she did very well. The third is Running with the Wolves, again, and it's also a great performance of the song.

Anyway, I could go on and on about this one. I'll stop here and leave something to discover for those who see what I mean.

For anyone not familiar with NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts, it's a great way to try out bands without all the studio-perfect processing. They feature all kinds of artists, including many who are just getting their starts, but also many well established bands. I highly recommend browsing the others. Here's a great example, and a really great band. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-OoG1aGYO0

I love Disturbed's cover of Sound of Silence! It's so good. I love The Last Resort, Desperado, and Wasted Time by the Eagles.

Zayn Malik and One Direction. I get meaning from every song i listen too, but the ones that strike me deepest are Golden by Zayn Malik: It goes and it's golden like sands of time
I hope and I hope you'll still be fine
I know that it's bright, look through the light and see, it's meant to be
I know that it's bright, look through the light and see, it's meant to be

Every single jigsaw piece
Seems to be incomplete

The choices we make change the path that we take
But I know
That somewhere out there there's a path that we chose
There's a life that we share, there's a love and it grows

It goes and it's golden like sands of time
I hope and I hope you'll still be fine
I know that it's bright
Look through the light and see, it's meant to be

Every single jigsaw piece

The choices we make change the path that we take
But I know
That somewhere out there there's a path that we chose
There's a life that we share, there's a love and it grows

Cause it grows and it grows
And I hope that you know
Cause it grows and it grows
I know that it's bright, look through the light and see

The choices we make change the path that we take
But I know
That somewhere out there there's a path that we chose
There's a life that we share, there's a love and it grows

And rEaR vIeW also by Zayn Malik:Can your heart be mine in search?
'Cause I have no time to help you find
All the words
Melodies and memories
Stories that sound absurd
I will tell no lies

As long as you look me in the eyes
I'll go wherever you are
I'll follow behind

Heard about all the things you've done
And all the wars that you've been in
Heard about all the love you lost
It was over before it began
Heard about all the miles you've gone
Just to start again
Heard about all that you've been through
It sounds like you need a friend, a friend

Please don't wait
I'm not coming home tonight
I wanna love you but I can't

As long as you look me in the eyes
I'll go wherever you are
I'll follow behind

Heard about all the things you've done
And all the wars that you've been in
Heard about all the love you lost
It was over before it began
Heard about all the miles you've gone
Just to start again
Heard about all that you've been through
It sounds like you need a friend, a friend

I never doubted myself
But I doubted you
I'm tired of looking at myself
In my rear view

Heard about all the things you've done
And all the wars that you've been in
Heard about all the love you lost
It was over before it began
Heard about all the miles you've gone
Just to start again
Heard about all that you've been through
It sounds like you need a friend, a friend

So, there ya go, two songs that mean something deep to me, but i have many many more, and i am such a Zquad, that i could go on for hours, not to mention One Direction lol. :D :bunnyhop:

Wow. Great music. Thanks.

Thanks to MidnightCoder I have fallen in love with the 'Running with the wolves" Aurora song!

Hey World (Don't Give Up) by Michael Franti
This song means a lot to me. Before my husband and I started dating, I posted the lyrics to this song on Facebook, and he took them and re-wrote them, making the song more positive and personal. That was a big clue to me that he was interested in me! ;) We then had the song lyrics read at our wedding...both the original and the re-written ones...

Tell me why the grass was greener,
Years ago, I swear, it used to grow here,
But no more here.
Tell me why on this hill,
All the birds they used to come to fly here,
Come to die here.
Tell me why I need to know,
Sometimes I wish I didn't have to know
All you've shown me.
Hey world, what you say,
Should I stick around for another day or two?
Don't give up on me, I won't give up on you.
Just believe in me like I believe in you.
Tell me why, on the corner,
All the kids that used to come to run here,
Load their guns here.
And tell me why it's okay to kill in the name of the Gods we pray,
Tell me who said it's okay to die in the name of the lies we say,
Tell me why there's child soldiers,
Tell me why they close the borders,
Tell me how to fight disease, and
Tell me now, won't you please
The only thing I want to do
Is to be in the arms of someone who
Believes in me, like I believe in you
And I say
Hey world what you say,
Should I stick for around for another day
Hey world what you say,
Should I stick for around for another day
Hey world what you say,
Should I stick for around for another day or two?"

Here is the rough re-writing. He made a more refined version, but I cannot find it!!

"Tell me why not,
Shall I plant some grass right here
and watch it grow more here

Tell me why not on this hill,
Shall I sing to the birds to fly here
and sit and watch the sky here

Why not, I need to know
Never I wish I didn't have to know
All you can show me

Hey world, what you say,
What can I do for you today?
I trust you wont give up on me, so long I keep my faith in you
to believe in you I must believe in me

Tell me why not, on the corner,
Shall I get to know the kids that used to run here,
And join them for some fun here

And tell me why not, it's okay that I honor the name of the Gods I pray,
Tell me why not, it's okay that I tell no lies and have something to say,
Tell me why not shall I treat a child with respect
Tell me why not shall I open the door for outsiders
Tell me why not shall I fight for health, and
Tell me please, why not?

Everything, I want to do
Stronger in the arms of someone who
Believes, like me, in beauty too

And I do
Hey world what you say,
What can I do for you today
Hey world what you say,
Want to go out and play
Hey world what you say,
Cannot wait for yet another day or two"
