Someone local to me found this girl in a park. In the photo she's had some "grooming" done by the finder. She's got no real use of her back legs, she drags herself and pushes her feet off the ground the best she can. She has medium to long hair, erect ears, brown eyes. She's ridiculously underweight but is eating and drinking. Her nails are long and she looks like she's been out there a while, hips feel displaced but will know more when I get her into the vet.

Can someone guesstimate breeds? She looks like she should be between 5-10 pounds. I fear this is an old injury that healed wrong and she's been coping with it. I will be grooming her properly or having her groomed if I cannot.

Just found a Craigslist Ad (posted a month ago) with This picture and description listed from the city the rabbit was found in.....I think it's the same rabbit. I texted and asked if she still had the bunny, (feigning interest in adopting her.)

"rabbit .... 1 year old ..... for a pet only not to feed to other animals! comes with bedding, food bowl and drinking tube. prefer you to bring your own cage but I have a small one if needed. call or text Nikki [Show Contact Info] need gone ASAP because there's a newborn baby in the house. Yeah angora, French or Satin cross of some sort. Might even be pure but hard to tell. Looks like it's molting. Poor girl :(

she's shedding a TON so could be molting but original finder shaved her down some, taking some mats out, has one HUGE mat covering most of her stomach.

had to bathe her, which helped some of the matting and did trim up some areas of the cut that were bad. Here's a size comparison.

Aww poor girl. Could you perhaps use a seam ripper to get the rest of the mat off? That has worked awesomely for the mats on my old 19yo cat who can't groom herself anymore. It's great for mats that are really close to the skin. Go you!

I'll give it a try, I may have to continue to lightly go over it with the clippers and hope it starts to loosen up or I can get as close to the skin as possible without hurting her or making her belly bald. May need to "surgical shave" her back end *i.e. no guard straight clipper as close to the skin without cutting her. * Her tail is matted, her feet are matted, her belly is one big mat -sigh-

I feel ya. I sighed a lot like that when I was working on our cat. I had to cut them halfway through with the scissors to see if I could get them combed out, but more often than not, I had to use the seam ripper. I worked on her 15 mins/day until I got it all under control. Hang in there, you are doing a GREAT thing. :)

Thanks - I've been out of rabbits for a while, and have just brought in the occasional rescue. I have to get this girl to the vet and find out what's going on with her rear end. Dog vets are expensive, rabbit vets? ridiculous expensive, and I get it - it's a specialisation that takes extra learning and blahblahblah but cut a guy some slack. LOL My friend referred me to a gent she used to work for so /hopefully/ He'll be willing to work with me on a payment plan or something. After her bath and mild attempts to groom her she is feeling better, moving around more She's hanging out in a huge varikennel (airline crate) that fits my 85# male dobe with lots of yummies, water (with pedialyte added for electrolytes) and some snuggly blankies (which I'm sure she'll pee on). Trying to keep her movement limited as possible but since she doesn't seem to be in pain (thus leading me to the conclusion she broke her hips/legs/something and it's healed improperly and she may be stuck like that the rest of her life) I don't know that I can restrict her movement too much. You know? She's only about a year or two old. Someone failed this girl something serious.

Aww those huge old mats are hard to get out. Clippers seems to be the easiest way. The mat should have one side that cooperates better. Find it and work from that end. Watch the nipples. Once you get part of it off, cut with scissors and give her a break. Poor girl :(

__________ Wed Sep 16, 2015 8:05 pm __________

clippers fit between mat and skin better. For me anyway. Reduces having to lift and pull the skin up. Angora skin will come up so fast you wont even be able to feel it. Slow and careful. It's terrible to turn an angora loose. They are so slow compared to a short hair rabbits. Very vulnerable grrrr.

I wonder if she broke her back during a grooming session

I know of 4 rabbits who had this injury for nail trims, once when the vet was doing the nail trim - can you say awkward :x

I still have a nice hefty one on her back at the base of her tail. I have a surgical shave on her rear end and blended in the surrounding fur using the clippers and various guards. Safe to say I ruined my clippers (luckily my cheaper set! easily replaced) but it was for a good reason. She's able and willing to move much easier now.

When I came home from work she was covered in her potties of the day. /sigh.

Could she possibly be mixed with flemish? She reminds me of a flemish I owned but then again I'm bad at rabbit breeds and the flem I had was way out of standard..
