I don't remember what site my mom read it off of, but it said
Female rabbits need to breed in order to keep their reproductive tract healthy.
it also said something along the lines of
if you're not going to breed your female rabbit, a hysterectomy is recommended.

I personally believe that that is further backing up to the phrase "multiplying like rabbits"

Okay......... I think maybe it's the whole bit about uterine cancer? That a female rabbit that is being bred is supposedly less likely to get it? I dunno.

That's my understanding, but it's true of many other mammals as well.

Unused reproductive organs tend to be an issue.

The House Rabbit Associations are generally in favour of spaying.

Spaying may make a rabbit a more pleasant pet since it removes the hormonal behaviours, and it does eliminate the risk of the rabbit developing uterine cancer later in life. But it is expensive and I've always understood that the risks to a rabbit from anesthesia are considerable.

People with a female pet rabbit need to take these things into consideration when deciding whether or not to have her spayed.
