Ran a quick count this evening. Not too bad considering the cold weather.
From the 3rd of November till today, I've had 15 does kindle 135 youngsters
with only one youngster dead. The largest litter was 12. The smallest was 7.

I've had three does "miss". Two first timers and one second timer.

Holy smokes, that's a lot of bunnies!!! Congrats :-D How many do you have total???

Not for sure, but between 250 to 300 head. I'll ship 30 to 35 Wed. morning.

I've got another 15 or 20 does to kindle here in the next two weeks.

Then another half/dozen or so after that.

I believe there's 2 or 3 does down there that should kindle sometime
tonight.

wish it wasn't so cold where I'm at now! I had a doe kindle yesterday and they all died from the cold air.... lost a litter of pure french angoras...bid bummer but I'll try again next year!

Congrats on your though!!!!

Sure beats the heck out of my production!!

How many does do you breed at one time?

Do you breed weekly - bi-weekly - more frequently?

Good to hear that you're back on track and pumpin' them out!

Congrats!

Hey Guy!!

I had a back-log of open does. With the prob's I was dealing with, I hadn't
kept the herd on even a "slow" breeding schedule. Once I got a handle on
it, I picked up the pace. I steadily bred does that came in season until I had
about 20 or so. I'm guaranteed to run into "holding-pen" shortages in about
8 or 10 weeks. I'm hoping to have at least "two" more phone calls from my
snake guy. He usually takes a lot of the slow-growers' and allows me to
even out my weight classes a little more and free up some cage space.

I did a major culling a couple weeks ago and dumped five does that were
duds and one of my excellent does that was at the end of her production
time, plus a really good buck, R2D2. He came down with wry-neck. I sure
hated to see that happen to him........He was a dandy!!

I usually breed on Wednesday's of each week, 5 to 7 does at a time. Four
Wednesday's later, I put in the boxes for a Saturday kindling. With this
colder weather, a lot of my middle-age does are having fewer kits per litter.
They surprised me with their high-numbers a week or so ago.

I pulled five really nice young does yesterday for replacements. I've got two
more litters to sort through that I can hold a few more does out of. I was
down to Zero replacements and I don't like that!! LOL. I like to have 8 or
10 "in-the-bank" most of the time. Ya never know when you may need one
quick!!

We've had record-setting lows here for nearly a week. Fortunately all of my
stock is in the barn and it's well insulated. It's not gotten below 40 degrees
in there thus far this season. My old bones couldn't handle having to work
out in the elements.

Most of my does are excellent nester's and pull a lot of fur for the kits. One
or two didn't, but I've got several coffee cans full of nesting hair that I've
saved just for the times when a mama is a little short on pulled hair.

When I have a doe that consistently shows laziness about making a good
nest, I'll make a note about it. NONE of her kits are held back for replacement
stock and she's shipped out when she's finished her career with me. I won't
sell her to anyone but my snake-guy. If a doe kindles twice on the wire.
She's gone the next time Larry (my snake-guy) shows up. Zero tolerance
for problem children.

I breed every-other Saturday - usually four does. That gives me mid-week due dates - I put the nest boxes in on the prior Saturday or Sunday. Kinda like your schedule only backwards - and half as much.

That insulation we added to everything last year has done the trick. Never got below freezing in either barn, so we couldn't be happier. Looks like we may be able to stay with bottles all winter long. Won't miss swapping out frozen crocks every morning, that's for sure.

Celice - whenever you have a doe pull a bunch of "extra" fur, save it in some kind of container with a lid. (I use those plastic gallon ice cream pails.) It will come in handy in colder weather when a doe doesn't pull enough. I've never had a problem with a doe getting upset that someone else's fur is in her nest. That surprises me but since it works, I don't worry about it. However, if a doe consistently does a poor job at nest building, you need to start looking for a new doe.

Wow! Congrats on all those bunnies!
Different ones commenting here regarding temperature... I moved my Holland that's at 30 days into our shop to protect the kits we're hoping for from crazy cold outdoor temps we were having. It's not heated. So even in there right now the temp is around 32-34. Is this warm enough for newborn kits or should I put a small heater out there to bring up the temperature a bit. I'm not sure what temp. is risky to kits.

Thanks for any reply.

32-34 is fine for kindling.

I just had a healthy litter of 9 born outside on an 8 F night.

IMO trying to get heat on them is more dangerous than helpful.

There's no auxiliary heat in the rabbitry. NONE. except for the residual heat
provided by the stock themselves. I've knocked down all of the draft issues and control the air exchange by timers on my exhaust fans.

The rabbits can handle the cold just fine. "I'M" the one who has trouble
with it.
