In other words, I'm building a new pen

I realized my rabbits won't reach 3kg in 3-4 months so I needed some extra space. It's not looking neat or pretty, but I have the feeling my rabbits won't care  I'm sort of enjoying the... personality... of my grow-out rabbit town. I should make a new pen facing the other two and I'd have a main street! :p It would be t's own little town in the backyard of our neat little farm. My carpenter-ancestors are probably turning in their graves..

Well well... pictures.

This is the spot I got to use. (Strangely my father doesn't want my artistic constructions all over the place ;) ) It's roughly 3x3m. Maybe a tad less.

Started by getting some sort of frame here. Note the lovely straight lines it makes.. It's not easy building in a slope.

So this is what I found for roofing. And I'll leave it like that, it should be enough to leave them protected spots in bad weather. (the old tree-trunk is in the pen as well with roof over it). I also made the door.

And the final picture. I need to buy wire and wrap around it, including the floor. I may cover the one side with wood as well, to protect from winds coming from the field. Once the wire is there I'll set the roof permanently and build a shelf and such in there for hideouts and extra space. :)

All material this far is stuff that's been dumped around here. Planks saved from some old house or something I figure. Only think I need to buy is new wire. Even the nails I've used was some I found in a box of old, non-straight nails.. I have others but I liked the concept of finding what straight ones there were left as I worked. I hate spending mony/resources on things that won't be perfect.. even with brand new wood and things it would look crooked. I like this old looking style though.. maybe I'm weird but I think it's charming. x)

I like it! Fits my "repurposing" love perfectly!

You always make very cool habitats for your buns Zab, this is no exception.

Your carpentry skills are about the same as mine, but I always reckon that if it serves its purpose then its good enough.

Well done.

I want to make my chicken coop and rabbit colony area into a little town, maybe put false fronts on them like old western towns, make little street signs for the walking areas. I have a lot of solar lights set around the coops and colony right now and at night it looks like a little city block.

Truckingguy that reminded me of something cool - I saw a picture one time of a chicken "village". Instead of a house with nest boxes they had individual "houses" that were made to look like different little buildings. There was a church and a school house, etc. So each chicken had their own little "house". They were in a row like main street on a small deck. I think they were inside a tractor but it may have just been in a fenced area for protection. I tried to talk hubby into it but it was too much work. Lots of painting to make the boxes look like building fronts. Definitely adorable though! Would love to see your store fronts if you do it. Please post pics.

I figured I don't need a new thread for this construction :)

I built a rabbit tractor today, which may also work as a spare cage in a pinch. It's about 180x80cm. I'll set a compost net roof (like the bottom) that will be hinged so it's top-loaded. It's heavy, but the wheels at the bottom makes it a bit easier to move.
I'll just put a piece of fabric or something over it to protect from the sun, or a piece of tin if it's raining. And throw a little house in there or something for hiding or weather protection. Then I'll have myself a functional grazing cage :)

Two of my 12-weekers are trying it :)

And this shows why I concider height to be important in a rabbit home.

I still need to buy net to the other new pen, I butchered the old dividing walls to get the net for this one. I noticed they wern't as good to have as I first thought, but I still have one left if I need to divide the outdoor pens for any reason.

__________ Tue Jun 18, 2013 2:20 pm __________

Small update.

I've cut out and attatched the wire in the bottom and the walls as well as secured any spot where wire meets wire. I need to buy clammers for some spots and get some wood to secure other spots but I think that's easier :)

Not the best picture, but the wire, some dirt - maybe not the best way to do it, but I dug out the soil as I worked, loading it onto the first strip of wire and so on. I put some stones there which I intend to partially cover with dirt, I just hate the look of the wire on the tree trunk ;)

The top still needs netting and the front is just attatched with 4 nails in the corners. but that's it for today. :)

I've figured how I will open up between the two pens I have (the ones under the black roof). I'll cut openings in the divider-wall and place a few tunnels there. If I want to make it into separate pens, I'll just put some bricks or stones in the tunnels :)

And, because it's cute.. my one litter has started to hop about :)

Wow Zab! You've given me some GREAT ideas for rabbit homes. I have 3 (soon to be 6) acres of property around my house. I see bunny houses everywhere! haha!

Thank you! :)
Yeeeah... I see rabbit homes everywhere too..

(made sure all pictures are view-able to everyone)

The ''hutch'' area... swedish law requires a raised floor and walls on 3 sides for winter use. It also works as a shelf and I'll fill it up with straw to hide in and keep them warm later :) I blocked the spot under the floor becauseI really sdon't feel like chasing rabbits there..

I'll add pictures in a day or two when some rabbits are trying it out.. I'll move the whole bunch out there while making a proper cleaning in the indoor colony. Time to move the kits out soon anyhow :)

__________ Wed Jul 10, 2013 7:04 am __________

With rabbits in it :)

I start to doubt that book that said all rabbits are afraid of heights :p

Wow, that looks terrific! The buns look so comfy and happy.

I love the stump scenic viewing spot :)

All I added to my colony space was some "man made caves".
Found some cardboard tubes rabbits love to hide into.

Beautiful Zab! Your rabbits look so happy there! Love how they're all congregated together up at the top. So cute!

Thanks :)

Now the 6 bucklings (6 out of 9 kits!) live there. The three doelings from the same litter stays with the mothers in the indoor colony, I'll keep two of them as breeders. Just going to chose which two :p The third will have to move out when the 5 younger kits are moving in a week or three.

The site I upload pictures tio are having trouble. I've lost most of my artwork as well.
I've used that site since may 2004. I know I should keeop back-ups but... meh. They're probably saved on some old hard-drive somewhere.. it's not like I even remember them unless I go check my wikis.
