Is there a way to do tanning simply, or without chemicals? Im totally new to anything to do with hides other than it already on my saddle! :)

I haven't been able to find anything very simple. Tannins might be safest, though, its in plants. The stuff that causes "tea water" in aquariums due to fresh wood added. And there's brain tanning, kind of extra gross. When I butcher them, I'm trying not to deface them all that much and feeling the brain is what makes the animal, messing with it is wrong to me.
I'm using Alum now, first time, very easy. Just dump them in the mix, scrape them, dump them back with a double mix and then break the hide.

Read into the Alum tanning.

Aluminum sulfate is considered a chemical, but it is used in many ways.

I went and just started my first batch of skins few days ago.
I got the Alum at Ace Hardware local for $9 for 4 lbs.
As long as you use a stirring stick and wear gloves when handling the skins, all is safe.
Just dont let kids around it. Or if old enough, teach them not to touch.

Wish I could help with more towards your question, but I felt the same way until coming up empty handed.
The Alum seems to be the easiest for me.
