Have a trio of CA's, they aren't pedigreed we just raise them for meat. Over the summer they have lost their dark black markings, the black markings turned gray. Is this normal for the summer months?

Yes, it is. In fact, if they're exposed to constant sunlight during summer months, they can and often will lose nearly all of their point color. I say that having raised both standard Cals and Cal Satins. It was the same each way.

The colour points are temperature sensitive, if they moult or grow new fur when its hot the colour will be a lot lighter. When its cold the colour will be very dark and may extend more over the face, sometimes giving the look of "eyebrows".

Devon, you're right, and I will go a step beyond that. If you keep a Californian or Cal Satin in a dark place all the time, they have the tendency of developing "smut" on their coats. All smut amounts to is a section of their body becoming cool enough on a consistent basis that patches of fur actually start turning black.

Keeping them shaded from direct sunlight is the answer. Shade is one thing. Darkness is quite another.
