My rabbit Hermes hangs out with my cats all the time. In fact I think he thinks he's a cat. So anyway they taught him how to jump up the cat tree so now he sits in the window in the cat tree. The other thing they taught him to do is go through the cat door in the screen door. When I'm home I leave my door open and the cats can go out into the yard (fenced). So Hermes bunny now jumps through the cat door (a 2 foot jump up) and goes outside. He grazes on the weed garden I have for my tortoises and eats the fallen apples, sits in the sun, and his favorite spot to lay on is my lawnchair in the middle of the yard.

So 2 weeks ago I was carrying out the garbage the night before garbage day and I had a ton of boxes I was carrying out to recycle and Hermes was out sitting in the lawnchair with my black and white cat and they were grooming each other. Squidgey my cat was licking his ears and cleaning them.

Suddenly there's this pounding on my screen door and I go out there and this lady starts screaming at me about how I can't just turn loose my rabbit if I don't want it and how he is about to be eaten by a cat and that if I let my rabbit loose it will breed with wild rabbits and there will be rabbits running all over the place and baby bunnies starving and how he has no food or water and on and on and on.

So once she wound down I explained that he's only outside when I am home and he comes in the house every night. That the cat isn't trying to eat him that she's grooming his ears and that he likes going outside. I also explained that he's been neutered and is male so won't be having bunnies.

I guess it's good that some people care but she needs to tone it down some.

Now I'm getting a new puppy and I built a dog run in the back of the house. Well since it's been completed Hermes and the cats have been back there everyday checking to make sure I did everything right. Another thing they've all started doing is playing in a box I tossed out in the yard to recycle. They have 4 boxes they could play in inside but nooooo they don't want to play in them. But the one outside is suddenly the best ever.

My rabbit is so weird.

 Wow... rabbits can cause so much drama!

It would have been nice if she had calmly asked you about the rabbit first, before launching into a diatribe... :?

I guess her heart was in the right place, but didn't it occur to her that if the rabbit was being hurt, it would have run away?

You do have an unusual situation there, LV426! Cats and rabbits often tolerate each other when raised together, but I've never heard of them being as bonded as yours are. What a happy family! Hope the new puppy fits in as well.

Sorry, LV, next time I will take a deep breath before knocking. LOL. Only kidding. I think it is awesome that the rabbit and cats get along so well!

They really do get along. My youngest cat plays tag with Hermes all the time in the house and in the yard. They love to play in boxes together and they run through the cardboard concrete form I bought them. They run through that tunnel all the time.

I'm delighted they get along my multispecies house has some pretty cute interactions too... cats can and do kill quite large rabbits at times (lets not ask how i know that) and d amazing damage to them as well so while her reaction was over the top I'm delighted she took the time to check things were ok - it's wayyyyyyyyyy more common for people to walk by problems without saying a word

I also have a multispecies home. My newfie cross dog loved my mutt meat bunny, they played together in the yard a lot. My poodle hated her, though. The poodle likes my new lionhead, but they don't know how to play yet (rescued from neglect). My iguana hates them all, and as often as needed will beat them with her stump of a tail. I hope someday I can find them all cuddling and grooming... or at least tollerating eachother.

Considering I've had a not-too-big pet rabbit terrorize my full-grown large dogs to the point they would not go outside without a human escort I would always ask first about the rabbit, then if warranted, go into the lecture about anything I believe to be dangerous to it.

Funny how she got all that from a bunny sitting on a chair with a cat.. one has to give the rabbit more credit than to sit still in order for a cat to eat it! LOL and if the rabbit got eaten by the cat then how would it mate with all the wild bunnies and produce starving childrens??? Sounds more like controlling than caring imo. :)
