So today I was out playing with my bunnies one by one and I got one of my here bucks out. I had noticed he had a weird patch in his coat but he does an awful job of grooming typically and gets large slobbery spots so I didn't think much of it. Well when I was grooming him I realized he had a huge gash (gash is a little dramatic but larger then a scratch) on his side. I'm completely bums founded irk how this happened! I looked around his entire cage and there were no wires sticking out or blood on anything. This nick name is stupid so I'm not surprised he managed something like this.... But how? His outdoor play pen is plastic and covered on all 4 sides. He is always alone except when he is breeding and I haven't bred him in 2 months. The only 2 things I can think of is 1. He cut it on the side of his square food dish so I replaced that with a round dish. Or 2. He burnt himself with his heat lamp. The lamp is a fair distance from his cage though.... What do you think?? And also how should I treat it? I read to use an iodine water solution and rinse it out well witch I did. I'll add some pictures to see if you think I should go to the vet and how I should treat. I don't have money for the vet so that is a last resort.

Since your name is Cowgirl, I wonder if you have any horses, because horse meds work great on rabbits. One of my favorites for wounds is Vetericyn spray, but it is rather pricey. You can also use Blu-kote, which is a lot less expensive. If you don't have those products and don't want to buy them (available at feed stores), some plain Neomycin ointment will help.

Good luck with him- that looks like a pretty big wound, but it should heal up fairly quickly with a little treatment. :)

Go with MSD's advise. I had a jr doe bite down to the flesh, skinning the hide right off of another jr kit. I could not find my super glue, but I just made sure it was clean, and left her alone. I put her in a small space. It healed up nicely. After cleaning it and putting something in it, you can superglue it closed, but not completely, leaving a space for drainage if necessary.

Ouch! I would definitely go with what Mamasheepdog recommended. Hope he heals up well. Keep us updated.

The pic is a bit hard to see but is there a dark, round bit to it that looks about the size a cigarette burn would be? If so it looks like he's got a bot fly larvae in his skin.

Another good one, and cheap, is hydrogen peroxide. If there's any pus in the wound, that will liquify it and allow you to squish it all out (press around the perimeter towards the hole). I have been cleaning an abscess daily with it, then coating it with neosporin (or generic) to keep out germs, and it's healing nicely.

the wound looks like its dried some and the bunn is trying to keep it clean. I would clip the hair around it just to help it stay clean. Istill have flys here so that would b one of my concerns. I use a peroxide and water on some of the wounds on my horses, but remember that it kills cells as well as cleans. Ialso use alchol an water it does not kill cells.neosporn, neomycin work great, everyone has given great advice. I am not all that knolegable when it comes to rabbits, but i am with other livestock. it doesent look bad enough to me to use superglue and it looks to old, but that is just me.you look like you r on the right path, hope ti goes well.you might try to give him son tetracycline in his water just in case. you can get it at a livestock feed dealer, i get mine from tractor supply co.

Had a deep gash like that on one of my dogs. I wound up buying a skin stapler and stapling it back together. Never did figure out how she got that open wound, you just never know with animals. she's also the dog that jumped/fell out of the barn loft window.

Not that I could see its a lot longer then a cigarette but and pretty uniform in colors..... Maybe two together? Is that possible?

do you smoke? does any one have access to your hutches that does smoke and would want to hurt you or your bunns? Better question is, can a wild animal get to my cage? Or can another bunny reach through the wire and bite him? you can go crazy with questions.

Nope I don't smoke.... No one with access to my bins do. Wild animals couldn't and I don't have any buns near him. We do belive it was his heating lamp.... Be careful with yours if you have a black bunny!

Doesn't look like a burn at all to me. Cigeratte or Heat lamp. Looks like he cut himself on something sharp or possibly another animal. Wild life will do anything to get a free meal. Hope he's feeling better and the wound is healing well.

Better to use diluted betadine or veterycin or even just soap and water for an injury like this. Hydrogen Peroxide will kill healthy tissue, it is really only good for cleaning out really dirty *infected* wounds initially.

Thanks, Tegan....

Off topic, but I had to read that twice!

But the hair is not singed...if it was the lamp, I would expect the hair to be burnt too.... How are his nails? Maybe he scratched himself really badly?

The hair was singed. Can't see it well in the pic but it was.
