Hi all,

I have someone that is interested in a Rex for a petting zoo, supposedly without intent to breed. If I sell w/out pedigree to a "pet" home, should I tattoo "PET" in its ear?

The same person also wants a French Lop- can you recommend a breeder's list?

Thanks!

I would tattoo PET in both ears... but that is just me...I am suspicious...BTW you know selling to a petting zoo counts toward that $500 limit per year for AWA licensing.....just fyi

I don't see what good it does to tattoo it. All it would stop is showing the animal which if it's pet quality won't place anyway. You can still breed a rabbit with pet pedigrees or none at all. I'm breeding netherlands sold to me with pedigrees that have pet written across them. They can also still resell it but without pedigree most breeders won't buy. Not that I don't have 4 rabbits without pedigrees that I'm also breeding. It just seems pointless because it doesn't stop anything.

Thanks for the input, esp. in re: petting zoo counting toward the AWA. I pretty much figured they would just breed anyway if they wanted to- kind of like all the dogs you see for sale as purebred not papered.

I agree it honestly wont stop anything..itll just waste your ink. Once you sell that rabbit to them its theirs to do what they want with it. They can even tattoo it and show it if they decide they wanna show it later down the road. but again if its pet quality it wont place well and they should expect that.

Actually, that was really funny! Maybe "This judge bites!" would deter showing of that "pet" bunny!

Forgive my ignorance and thread hijacking, but...AWA? What is that?

AWA...can mean several things, but in this case I mean the Animal Welfare Act. This is administered by the USDA and has to do with the selling and transporting of live animals. If you sell more than $500 per year to a pet store, petting zoo, laboratory, etc., you must apply for a license to sell. This does not apply to direct to owner sales or meat/fur sales. Here is a link where you can read all about it...

It would only count if the petting zoo will be selling that animal that was sold to them by MamaSheepdog. If they are the "end-users" then no. Its the wholesalers who must have this license..

Actually, the Petting Zoo is going to "exhibit" that animal to the public, so it still falls under the category that would require anyone selling to them to have a license.
