Something got into the barn last night and scared the rabbits (at least that's my conclusion). One of the Havanas was dead and Luna squished all her babies. All 10 kits, dead in the box

I'm really upset, not only because I've been waiting for ages to get a live Checkered Giant litter, but because Luna is sold and was supposed to go to her new home when the babies are weaned. Since the babies are dead, she'll probably be leaving sooner. No litter of babies and no doe, she's my only female Checkered.

I'm so sorry, Cait! When I saw your title, I gasped and actually said "Oh no!" out loud!

Could you explain what happened to her new owner, and get another litter out of her? Maybe you could even foster a couple kits (or even the entire litter!) to another doe to raise if they need her by a certain date. I know how much I was looking forward to watching them grow, so you must be devastated. Not much of a way to start your twenties! (((Hugs!))).

So sorry! {{{hugs}}} I agree with MSD, can you ask the buyer for a chance to get another litter? Or maybe breed her and get some of the kits back from them?

i would explain things to the new owner. Doesn't hurt to put things on hold for a bit. call it an act of God. And has she been paid for yet? most of the time people will understand...afterall .. it's only 10 weeks to wait as you can breed her back immediately.

I'm going to see if the buyer will let me rebreed her and try for babies again.

On the upside, my fantastically wonderful boyfriend wants to buy me a new Checkered doe or two as belated birthday presents so that I'm not stuck in a doe-less situation.

I know its farming, and I know I shouldn't get too upset, so I'm trying hard not to be too mad. I had to leave early for work, so I haven't taken care of the dead kits yet (I pulled the box from Luna's cage but its still in the barn, am I an awful lazy sicko?) and I'm not looking forward to it. Might make Dad do it...

Ah crap, that just sucks. I hate when kits die, its such a waste, bums me out even though I have no problems butchering rabbits or regarding them as livestock. Its just that their babies--- So Sorry--

sorry to hear that story. but we all have to remember most of us are farming. these buns are a wonderful gift. but these things will happen. hope you can get peace with this accident quickly.
