I just read this story a short time ago..and yes I would and have done the same to protect my livestock..but honestly why does everything anyone does have to be tweeted or facebooked? If he wanted to get people up in arms he sure went about it right...and what's up with the selfee?

We don't know the whole story, maybe it could have been handled differently  but it was certainly stupid to post about killing them

But I feel for the guy

My 90 year old neighbours lazy rotten son dumped a dog on his property and only visited it a couple times a month. The old man couldn't keep the dog contained, the poor lonely pup was often at our house looking for attention or to play with our dogs and we'd walk him back home but after he killed a few of our chickens we sent him to the pound instead, where it costs $80 to bail an animal out, and after the 3rd time the son left the dog there - he was a friendly and sweet pup but was likely euthanized as he was a Pitbull cross.

PS if my neighbours dog went after my horse instead of the chickens he'd have a hefty vet bill to pay and a dead dog if it happened a second time

I think it would be great if more people realized what happened to their dumped or loose dogs. In my state it's perfectly legal to shoot dogs who are attacking livestock.

I love my dogs(and dogs in general), but a bullet is just as fair to them as euthanasia in a shelter, and it's a whole lot faster.

Why has it become so common for AR people to use death threats???

Because it works I am afraid. It has gotten to the point that politicians cower from militant groups. The result is rather than standing up for the livestock owner who is the victim they would rather just get rid of the livestock by passing a law against it. The militant group wins. It stinks.

I'm just guessing, but is it possible it stems from many of them valuing animal life as much as or more than human?

Edit: JohnMc's answer makes alot of sense as well...

I don't really believe our politicians are afraid of anyone. If they are pretending to cower to AR groups, I'm sure that they are also taking fat donations from said groups on the side.

As to valuing animal life as much as human, if they were all vegetation I might believe that, but, it's amazing how many are not. Some of the people throwing out death threats for this or that, will go home and eat a hotdog later. I've met the type both in person and online.

The only vegetarians I know in person feel that our methods of obtaining meat (raising our own and hunting) are a much lesser evil than purchasing factory farmed meat.

Maybe they are some of those who don't realize that meat doesn't just magically appear in the store? :wall:

You make some really good points. I guess I'll give up trying to figure them out.

It's not rational so you might not be able to figure it out.
In other words,
I think you are probably too smart to understand. :p

It stems from some unusual place in the human mind, the same place the allows people to blow each other up in the name of this or that belief.

Taking the dogs out... good. Should've done it the first time, when they attacked his calf.

Posting it on Facebook... really, really bad. What did he think would come of it?

Like Ottersatin said, SSS.

If you could educate people what happens when they dump dogs or let them run around it would be good. I wish everyone could post when they end up having to kill a dog or find one dead from starvation out in the country. Unfortunately you get that backlash of the people who care a lot about dogs and elevate them above someone else's livestock. The target audience mostly get missed. If you grow up around here you know what happens to dogs that wander on property with livestock. They don't even have to be attacking the livestock. Most will return a harmless dog once or twice but even if it's not bothering livestock it often gets shot after enough repeat appearances.

Conflicting. On one hand, he had all right to shot the dogs. On the other hand, he really shouldn't even feel proud of it. Does anyone really want to shoot a dog? Does anyone really want to kill another persons pet?

I understand being happy that you protected your animals, and being happy that they're safe now. But the dogs are innocent - they don't know any better. It's the owners fault.

Completely agree what he did was right, he gave warnings and had to protect his animals. But he really shouldn't have posted it on facebook, much less be so proud about it. Ravens and foxes annoy me to no end, killing chickens and such. But I still wouldn't be terribly happy killing them just for following their instincts trying to live.

Bah, whatever. Just for future reference, don't tweet or instagram or facebook killing dogs. Doesn't end too well too often.

Re: Saccos

My father taught me -- Never say anything you would be ashamed of if it was front page news.

And a mentor once told me -- You are a master of your words before they are uttered. They are your master thereafter.

I remember this incident making the news. The young lady made a strategic error. She did not factor in her position within the firm. As a communications specialist she should be well aware that what is a simple joke on intent can be misconstrued by the receiver for a myraid of reasons. Her bosses then look at the results and reconsider her professionalism.

A sad affair for I don't think her intent was to launch personal attacks.

Oh, and I don't do Facebook at all. I read their TOS and decided it is not for me.
