I sold these kids a pair of rabbits months ago, and they were well cared for (the kids are my neighbors so I could help them monitor their care). This morning the rabbits were awake and alert, when the kids got home from school they found both rabbits had died. I did a biopsy for the kids and found this weird pastel green skin, a dark spot on the stomach of one, and a dark green paste in the mouth of the other (almost like she was mid chew). I took the head off one apon their request and found some of her brain coming out the base of the skull, but the skull is still completely intact (didn't get a picture of that though, my hands were too bloody). Their lungs were also super red. I have no clue what to tell these kids about why their rabbits died. What caused the green? What could have caused this?

-- Tue Apr 03, 2018 5:04 pm --

More pictures

Clostridium perfringens C (formerly known as C. welchii,]

usually caused by system imbalances- ie feed change, overeating etc.. it's a random killer hard to prevent- near impossible to treat --it is just too fast once it starts,,

I would guess bacterial overgrowth due to stress or feed change as well. The green skin is probably due to having been dead for a while before the autopsy.

The intestines and stomach of the grey one do not look very full, it's possible it hadn't been eating as much as it should have, which can be both a symptom and a contributing factor.
