What's the difference between a colony and a
Rabbitry? Is it the same? Some people just call it
One or the other or is there an actual difference?

Also, when starting a colony or rabbitry what
Are some things to keep in mind on starting one?
Just read a thread on number of cages to have
When starting out. There was good info in that thread.

I do not have a barn or any inclosed building as
Of now to keep my buns in. However , I have
Seen bun farms that are built out doors with
Shelter. Just was curious what would work best.
I obviously what have to do best with my budget
And what works for me but what just curious on any
Tips you could hie me to start. Thanks

A Colony is keeping several rabbits togeather in a big cage, run or room.

A Rabbitry in my view is anyone breeding rabbits on a regular basis.

Most rabbitrys are not the colony type but have each rabbit in their own cage, unless they are does with a litter or a bunch of youngsters sharing one.

As you are in North Dakota and winter is starting, protecting your rabbits from freezing rain, snow and wind will be your first concern in where to put your cages. You'll also need to deal with frozen water cracking bottles or crocks and that they get enough liquid water.

Rabbits generally don't breed if kept outside in the winter but if you do get a litter, keeping the kits warm and giving the doe enough water to produce milk is a concern.

Most adult rabbits handle cold weather fine but small breeds (under 6 pounds) should have a insulated house to shelter in on cold nights.

Well I have a 4x8 cage now that I could section
Off to make four cages for now. The cage is sheltered
With a metal roof and a big box in back for shelter
As well. Tarps on both long sides for shelter from
Elements and fiber glass on the small ends for warmth/
Shelter ect.

It's good to know that some buns won't
Breed in the winter which makes sence.
I don't know if I would breed in the winter
Anyway do to no way really to keep the kits
Warm. However I'am going to put a heat lamp
Set up with a timer so it's not always on and I
Can adjust the heat in the boxes.

It is getting cooler at nights but still
Gets somewhat warm during the day
However again I don't think I will breed
In the winter unless I can get a inclosed
Building or something. Just have the cage
For now. But as I get into this think I will rig
Up set up so I can have more buns. :)

Electrical wires and rabbits are not a good mix. Unlike chickens rabbits will chew them so I don't recommend a heat lamp, I don't like them incase of over heating the baby animals or for the fire hazard they pose either.

No I wouldn't have the wire in the cages. It's
More like a set up in thinking like light bulbs
That I can put on a timer type set up.

I know rabbits chew, wouldn't give
Them the option to the wires.

Heat lamps are a big cause of barn fires, no matter where the wires are. Especially with rabbit fur as a flammable material. Under most circumstances, the buns will not need any heat, just shelter. A wind block is enough.

That's good to know . I do have tarps
Around the cage so it should be ok and
The doors I put fiber glass in so should be
Ok that way too.

Was more thinking of a light fixture type set
Up rather a heat lamp. Anyways, thanks though .
