 Why, oh WHY does my hard drive freeze my mouse and sound like a jet readying for take off when I plug my camera in? Online, offline, offmyrocker... happens randomly. Consistently ticks me off though, I'll tell you that!

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!!!

Ooops- Maggie can you please move this to Hopping Mad? Obviously, I'm so hopping mad I can't see straight...

I do feel better already though. :)

Kicking it might also help you feel better.

But be forewarned; if you break the machine you have to SELL MANY RABBITS in order to buy a new one that likes your camera better! :o

On second thought, posting it here to vent your frustrations is a much better option - incurs less family wrath this way too! :D

Is there software for the camera that is sucking memory?

Check online for a download of the drivers for your camera. If you can find one, first remove all of the programs associated with your camera so they won't interfere with the new download. BTW, I hope your camera isn't a Kodak Instashare. That one imbeds itself into all sorts of unexpected places.

The camera is a Canon "Powershot" (I think)...

Since I am the most computer illiterate person you will probably ever suffer the misfortune to meet, I will have to assign Firstpup to the removing and replacing of camera to computer communication programs.

Or else just kick the pc like Duman says... although I am more inclined to take my wrath out on the camera itself, since it has been behaving poorly in myriad other ways.

I had a powershot. Nice little camera except the nylon in the tripod socket was too soft and stripped on me. I was selling clothing online at the time so a tripod was a necessity. As I remember it that's a "click and play" item on Windows. If you remove the old program and plug it in Windows will automatically download the drivers for it.

Does your computer have a memory card reader slot? That may work better than plugging the camera in. I know you can get USB memory card readers....

Precisely what I was going to say! I don't bother with plugging cameras in and dealing with software and drivers for them. Much easier to get a card reader, stick your memory card in the right slot, and plug it in.

The memory card should be in the battery compartment. You probably push it in, and then it will eject. Remember what side the contacts face.

If it says "SD" on it, then even this cheapie should do the trick: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sabrent-4-Slo ... r/15819318 It works with several different kinds of cards.

I don't like camera software. I avoid it. :)

My hard drive doesn't have the built in reader. Now this memory card reader Miss M is talking about- I think I might just be able to manage that!

Memory card readers are the way to go. You don't have to kill the dog if he chews the camera cord and no software hassles. I just bought my daughter one for Christmas. She kept taking mine. :) Target under $20.

If you get one, the first time you plug it in with a card in it, your computer will take a few moments to identify the card reader and install the proper driver. After that, a folder with the contents of the card should pop up. From then on, it doesn't have to do the first step. It really is easy.

It may take a moment for the folder to pop up, because it's reading what's on the card first. :)

Shay kept taking ours to work, and finally bought one for the office.

Mine doesn't have a special slot for Micro SD (I have that in my phone), so I bought a little adapter that I slip the card into, and then put the adapter into the SD slot. I think that one I linked to actually has a Micro SD slot. Nice! :)

But it should be noted that if your camera has internal memory and stores pics there automatically when the card is full, that you *do not* let the dog chew up the camera cord or you won't be able to get the pics off the camera and onto the computer without replacing the cord.
(But what am I saying?? Chase would never do that!!!)

My little Chasie-woo would never think of doing such a thing! Eating the Toblerone out of my Christmas stocking is more his style.

You get one of those from Santa too? That is my favorite present, every single year! The evidence just keeps piling up....
