I have a very large rabbit named Potter. 3 days ago when I was cuddling her and petting her I felt something "crusty" under her dewlap. When I was able to get the fur and fat out of the way I found a very nasty sight. She is an indoor rabbit. Hasn't been bitten (that I know of). I do have a dog in the house and 2 children (both older). Potter is just a year old last month.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Or how to take care of it?

Without a picture we can't rly say much. Maybe she scratched herself, if the bib drags on the floor a lot it could be caused by irritation like sore hocks are.
Just keep an eye on the wound for now, keep it clean and see how it heals. If it's a full on absess, take hold of your rabbit and drain the wound of the pus and clean the inside with a saline solution. If after that it doesnt get better I recommend a vet or you'll have to invest in some penicillin if you want to do it yourself.
But take all this with a grain of salt. Without a picture there's only so much anyone can say on assumptions
 
I agree that a picture would be very helpful.

Sometimes moisture under the dewlap will cause a skin irritation. If she scratched at it, that could easily make matters worse. Just a thought.

And that looks horrible, I definetly see an absess, but I'll let more experienced people judge the wound.

What I would do if it was my rabbit

Pluck all the fur within in inch of the wound

Moisten the area with warm, slightly salted water and try and wash away the "gook" so you can see what what is going on

I agree with this. Also like I said before if you feel an absess, drain it and rince it with saline water.
From how bad it looks you'll want to look into buying some penicillin I think unless you can take your bun to the vet. That'd be best honestly, but I know that's not possible for everyone, certainly isnt for me.

:yeahthat: You need to get clean skin around the infection so that you can keep the wound clean. The slightly salty water will help to get the infection cleaned out without damaging the healthy skin around it. It will also help in promoting healing. Once you have it cleaned and hair removed please get us some more pictures so we can see better what is going on with her.
 
The vet visit is definitely not possible right now.
I don't have any antibiotics to put on it. Just triple antibiotic ointment- that the same?
Ms. Potter hops by me know with this "knowing" look in her eyes, telling me she knows what I'm about to do.
I will try to get this done tonight (work late and kids' sports). And hopefully get more pictures.

antibiotic cream will work, but it's very important that she can't lick it off. an injection will work faster and will hit harder - a combination of topical and injection is usually best for infections like that and abscesses. you don't have a location on your profile, but if you're in the US you can get a bottle of penicillin and some 22 gauge needle syringes from tractor supply. the vial isn't super expensive and will last a long time.


she sounds quite well endowed, which makes me wonder if maybe she is a tad overweight? some rabbits just have large dewlaps, but they do seem to get larger if they gain weight, and a large dewlap can cause these problems like sores under the dewlap and sometimes a roll over the butt. if you can run your hand down her spine and you have to press to feel the bumps, she may need to go on a little bunny diet once she's well. good luck!
 
I second what Shazza recommended, I picked up a bottle of penicillin from tractor supply and keep it in my refrigerator. Rabbits don't need much so I have plenty for like, years. (Unless it expires soon, I should check the date) also the needles and syringes are really quite cheap as well, I tried to find them cheaper off amazon and decided TSC was my best bet.

If you have another person to hold the rabbit still it makes it much easier, but if it's just you trying to inject it I found that I could sit on my knees, cover the face of the bunny with a towel / old t-shirt, and then hold the bunny in the V created by the opening of my knees and legs and that way it couldn't squirm away and the darkness from the towel helped to keep them calm. Also check out this topic for a good description on how to give the injection subcutaneously.

Good luck! Keep us updated. Initially that almost looks like a tick in the picture, is it just scabbing?
 
Honestly I though ticks too when I first saw it.
I tried getting her to lay still long enough for me to clean it up last night but she's one squiggly little love. (only my 6 year old was around at the time so he wasn't much help). I'm going to try again tonight after work...

Sausage her tighly in a towel. You'll make things easier safer and faster that way
 
You should invest in some ivermectin then. It'll protect her from getting any other. She probly just scratched at em from the irritation they caused.
