My holland lop Molly has her second litter now.
5 for the first and 5 for this one.
The babies been hopping in and out of the nest box
for a bit now. I'm not sure when they were born without
looking. Anyway, I moved them over to a different cage
today and took away their nest box.
As I picked up each babe, they screamed at me.
They were a pi$$ed off bunch of kids. You really have to
get a grip on them as you pick them up, or they wiggle loose.
Guess I better start handling them more.......
This is the first group of screamers that I have had.

Do they continue to do that ?
One of them was very vocal.
I wish I understood rabbit talk...
I bet the one was swearing at me :)

The first litter did not do that.
I handled that group a lot.

I think one screamer can set the other kits off. Usually they scream if they get a bad fright.
Recently, one of Pancake's screamed like crazy because it was trapped between the nest box and some cage wire. I held it until it calmed. It screamed the next time I picked it up as well, but then forgot about the whole thing and has acted like any normal kit since then.

I am certain there is a genetic predisposition for screaming :)

I rarely had a kit scream until the kits fathered by my new Californian buck were 2 weeks old. The first time it happened I almost dropped the little one it was so unexpected as I just casually picked him out of the nest box without any fuss - or so I though

The kids thought it was great though and would prove to their friends that rabbits do make noises

my boy thinks it's hilarious too.

I find screamers tend to turn into nervous Nellie's... or at least rabbits more prone to startle at things you wonder why at. :)

But my boy will pick them up over and over again over the period of a week... they usually stop by then. It's good training as he's very gentle with them. But he finds it very very funny.

I find them funny also :)

One of them popped out of the door when I reached for them.
Stacking units, middle cage. Good thing there was some hay on the
floor from the hay racks to cushion the fall. It just spun around to
glare at me. I got as close as I could and reached straight down to
pick it up. I was afraid if I fiddled too long, it would have hid under
something. That would not have been good.

They were born April 22 . So 18 days old today.
I think I better get some oatmeal, etc into their treat dishes.
Should help by bribing them :)

One of them is pure white. Not sure if male or female but I am
thinking of keeping that one. I kept one broken white black
female from the first litter.

Maybe they get spooked real easily. I've had ones that were very jumpy and made some noise when they were around 2 weeks old. They would jump out of your hands if you weren't careful. Once they were were 3-4 weeks old that behavior stopped and I wouldn't see any lingering differences.

Well the babies have calmed down. Still not liking to get picked up.
This litter the ears have dropped real quick. They are adorable.
I am still hoping the all white one is a female....it's a keeper :)

Did you pick them up while they were in the nest? Many will scream the first time you pick them up if you wait too long. Just hold them until they stop and do it again the next day. I haven't found they turn out any different than the others. Also presence of some type of predator can make them nervous. When we had rats and lost a couple kits all the remaining ones screamed horribly for a week. Snakes and cats if your rabbits are not in cages with small enough wire will also cause problems. Generally they don't get upset about my dogs when they are raised around dogs.

I have never really had any litters that had screamers, although I have had a few older bucks that were a bit wimpy and when I went to take them from their cage or even if I went to pet them they would scream. And yeah, litters tend to be like that. I do have a cottontial doe as a pet and whenever i pick her up she tends to scream. But I'm not breeding her lol. So I really wouldn't consider it a big deal really, unless it's bad to have a screaming litter?

I really did not handle them while they were in the nest box. I just
checked the box for wetness or soiling.
I moved the mom to a different cage, reached for each baby and
placed them with mom. As I picked up each one, most all of them
screamed. They did not get the nest box back.

Now they are hip hopping around the cage.
I need to get pics of them. I pet them daily now and talk to them.
Mom has a kicked back personality, a real sweet easy going rabbit.
She likes being petted :)

We have a basset. He likes the rabbits. The other day when I
was grooming the angoras, he was on the picnic table
basically sticking his nose in the action.
