No rabbit photos today, I didn't get to it. I'm trying to get the new chicken coop up and running before it gets too cold.

So rabbit update... The broken red doe that I had brought up from the US (that's the second photo in this topic) died of mucoid enteropathy shortly after I got her, so no babies from that line.

The broken doe that starts off this topic is one I produced from a red doe bred to a broken chestnut buck. The buck was from a red doe bred to a broken black NZ. His pattern was awful -- far too much colour to be showable, but he carried the broken gene and passed it on to his daughter. She's about 6 months old now and I'm trying to get her bred but she just won't cooperate.

The second broken doe that was just in the nestbox when I started this topic didn't make it. She got squished while still in the nestbox, so this one and only broken red is all I've got.

As far as rabbits go, I went from 44 holes to 4 this summer due to a move in homesteads. I went from 3/4 acre to 22 acres :P The 4 holes that I kept were does and litters plus an assortment of weanlings from 6 different litters (including the broken red). This gave me a good base to start back up from once we got settled in the new place. Having said that, I haven't had a litter since June. I borrowed a red NZ buck and he's 0 out of 6 tries on the 3 adult does that I kept. I picked up a black NZ buck two weeks ago and have been breeding him to the 6 month old does every couple of days. Hopefully there will be some litters again soon!!

I've currently got 24 holes and may actually stay with the smaller rabbitry. I quite like having a little more time on my hands and the new house needs a LOT of time. The barn did not get repaired yet so I had to buy a rabbit shelter to house the buns over the winter. Here's a pic:

It's a customized horse run-in and it holds two 16 foot racks of 2-level cages with room for supplies stored on top. Mostly I have black and broken black NZ with a couple of harlequins and one broken red NZ doe :) I'll try to get a pic of the doe up soon.

OMG you are sooo lucky, I am just embarking on a New Zealand Red breeding program. We do not have them in Australia so I am starting with a non related pair of New Zealand Whites and a two orange Flemish x New Zealand whites. The Reds are fast becoming my favorite bunny. thank you for sharing.

Lovely bunnies MoonKitten! I hope you get lots of broken reds- I'm a sucker for broken anythings.
