So, the hubby and I had about 6 hours of time to kill today, driving 3 hours to my sisters baby shower, and then home again. We talked about what we are possibly going to be adding in spring..........yup, I may just get my broken NZ after all, along with a red if we can find them within a decent drive time! Image We'd like to add a couple doe, and for sure look for a really nice NZW buck to compliment our juniors we have coming up. We have a question though. Exactly what breeding does it take to get a broken NZ, and do they have the same meat to bone ratio as a NZW? I feel silly asking this, but it's something we're curious about, especially considering the goals we have to increase size, and meat production. I guess we'd have the same question about the reds as well.

:D I don't have an answer to your question but congrats on getting hubby on board for expansion. Always nice to have everyone in complete support of Rabbitosis. :P

I bred a broken black Rex to a NZW. The litter came out 5 chestnut,1 black, 1 broken black. They all have regular fur. The sire was/ is 12.5lbs all Rex on his ped. So my plan now is to breed these to does back to another buck that is 1/2 NZW/NZR to the black and broken black doe. I will keep any broken and any black that comes out of this breeding.

So my point is try and find a rabbit that carries broken and breed to it. I would have bred straight NZ but I don't know of anything but NZW in my area.

Dan

Thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it! :D I have an extremely supportive hubby, he doesn't always necessarily enjoy the rabbits like I do, except for the kits when they first start coming out of the nestbox, but he's pretty easy going if there's something I want to do. Can't complain at all. ;)

There's a breeder about 3 hours from here, in spring we may just take a drive to go look, and ask our questions there.
