The term ‘Drift’ in relation to rabbits is used to describe a process of moving a breed or type of animals in a relay across a continant(s).
Those interested in the type of animals being drifted volunteer to obtain a set of animals from the source. This can be adults or kits. If adults are used, the 1st relay person will raise a litter from the animals they are housing, and then they will take the kits (or the original parents) and move them to the 2nd person in the relay, and so on until the animals reach from one side of the country to the other.
This has been successfully completed with American Rabbits in a project called the American Drift.
To do this for Astrex rabbits, volunteers are needed to do the transporting. There are breeders from the U.S. in South Dakota, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and California. In Canada, there is a breeder in Alberta and I believe another towards Ontario (check RabbitTalk to be sure). There are several breeders in the UK, and recently a breeder in Brazil joined the http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/CurlyAstrexRabbits/ Yahoo group so they are out there; just pretty darn spread out.
If anyone is interested in working on an Astrex Drift, join http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/CurlyAstrexRabbits/ and volunteer! Let’s get Astrex coated rabbits to every family that has the desire & dedication to work with them!
- A trio of Astrex coated kits
- Black Otter Coat
- Very nice curl.
- A proud Mama and Kits ~ This doe is almost 7 months old. Generally Astrex lose their curl during their eclipse coat, and start growing it back in by a year or so of age. Marna’s Menagerie in SD, USA has shared that her 3 year old stock have the curliest coats they’ve ever had, so as Astrex mature, they can grow even more curl & wave in their fur.
