Not alot happening today ..

It’s been pretty cold outside so we’ve pretty much stuck indoors today! But, the rabbits & chickens are doing fine. We did find a “hidden nest” that the hens were laying in! Trying to keep them penned up a little longer in the morning so that they lay in the nest. We’ll see how that works out.

Chicken Run Re-Work

With the new chicks in the house, hubby decided it was time to re-work the chicken run.  Mainly because I’m not too happy having to deal with chicks in the house again!  LOL

Basically, we’ve taken the large 20 foot x 24x run and re-arranged it.  Now (or it will be) one 8 foot x 20 foot to attach to the large coop and an 8 foot x 8 foot run attached to the smaller “Purina” coop we originally built for the chickens.  In about a week or so we will be moving the chicks out to that coop.  The runs share a wall so that the chickens can all “get to know each other” with the chicks being somewhat safe from being pecked by the olders.  When the time is right, we will take the new hens and integrate them into the big coop and the roosters will be grown out for fryers/roasters.

Will post pictures once it’s all said and done!

My Favorite YouTube Channels

I thought I would share some of my favorite YouTube channels!

mhpgardner – Mostly Gardening video’s.  He has a great greenhouse and does some wonderful gardening with it.

TheMrsVolfie – An absolutely amazing woman who has a 1/2 acre homestead.  She’s done everything from rabbits & chickens to goats & cows!  Amazing creativity too!

JRSKICK – This is the guy I got the idea for my rabbit hutch from.  His earlier video’s are about raising meat rabbits.  Recently he’s gotten into chickens, goats & sheep too!

These are my 3 favorites, although I’m subbed to alot more channels.  Hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

New Beginnings …

This is the first time I’ve ever “blogged” so bear with me!  Mostly this will be a chronicle of our adventures in creating a more self-reliant homestead.  We’re well on our way!

We now have 13 laying hens, 1 Rooster, 20 meat mutt chicks and 1 “bunny” and 15 meat mutt rabbits.
