Reeves just makes herself look sound like a 5th grader in that article. It's an opinion peice with almost no facts, no evidence and no support. Meant to get people arguing in comments, if she even thought it out to that point.

My favorite is the part where the poverty stricken children should starve instead of eating cute, fluffy bunnies. *headdesk*

the wording of the article is to get people worked up about fluffy being used as food, and therefore influence laws that are proposed or in the workds in the NY area. DO NOT underestimate opinion pieces such as this.

I hate how people freak out over meat breeders ,but they are completely oblivious to the chicken in the grocery store or steak on their plate. Did those animals commit suicide? Not at all. I'd rather slaughter an animal in its home that some scary slaughter house that they ( I believe) are given less than good treatment.I would be scared to be in some big industrial building hearing and smelling new scents and sounds. We also have to trust our big corporations to put antibiotics into our foods because what they feed them is making them sick. I have a lot of respect for those who live or mostly live the homesteader lifestyle because they have broken away from people that never question how or where things come from. I personally plan to live a partial homesteader life style when I am able to live independently and have the space necessary. My boyfriend now doesn't have the heart to cull a rabbit that will live an awful life if kept alive. The rabbit is suffering from malocclusion. The vet that looked him over was like "Well you could just use a dermal tool to help him..." What kind of life is that for a rabbit? Traumatized because someone has to take a tool to his face on a monthly basis to the point that he probably won't want it or even better....Starvation and painful teeth? Many situations change and I find it hard to believe that people will trim the teeth of a rabbit for 5+ years of its life. You hear many cases were people put it off to the point it gets so bad for the rabbit. I told him I will cull him to snake food myself because circle of life has to happen and it's just being wasteful and selfish to keep him alive. And I am the one that has spent the most time with this rabbit and had it living with its mom and other kits in my room!I I've handled them since the day they were born and he is the sweetest of the liter. When I spoke to it with a friend he agreed and happen to tell his mom and mother's friend. What did the mother's friend do? "That's just cruel!" and he asked why and this is a better alternative than the poor quality of life that it will live ," Because it just is! Awful to turn it into snake food....blah blah blah" Everyone has to eat. Everyone has to live.

That paper seems to publish a lot of anti-meat propaganda, judging by some of the other articles I read.

Rabbits are a terrific food source for third world countries where many lack a means of refrigeration since most or all will be consumed in a meal for the family.

As for Fluffy being used for food, cows and chickens and pigs and sheep and goats all start out being heart-stoppingly cute too. About the only food animals that aren't adorable as babies are fish and shellfish. What these people don't understand is that if these animals aren't bred for food, they will disappear- there simply aren't enough people that keep livestock as pets. We've already lost a good many heritage breeds and are just asking for a catastrophe of epic proportions should a virus or bacterial infection strike the commercial breeds- there is so little genetic diversity, especially in turkeys, that it could very well wipe them all out. The same can be said of commercial produce.

Bob Bennet mentions in his book that in favorable economic times rabbits are viewed as pets, while during economic downturns they are valued as meat animals. Rabbits are unique in the duality of roles they play, and I see that as a favorable quality, not one that should be denigrated.

So sorry you're having to deal with all of that, Peach! :( Most people are so irrational, and react without thinking first.

What a crazy article. So... better to let people in third-world nations starve, rather than teach them about a nutritious, self-perpetuating food source, with a high food-to-meat ratio, that they can raise easily themselves?

And bunnies shouldn't be used for food or clothing, because they're cuter and smarter than chickens. :?

may I make a suggestion re the malocclusion bunny and you can't keep it because it's cruel.

Show them very clearly what the teeth are like on a normal bunny.
Point out that rabbit teeth are ALIVE.. they are always growing. - it is painful for the bunny to get their teeth trimmed.
Point out the thinness of the bunny compared to a normal bunny.
Ask would they want the bunny to die in vain? would they feel better if the bunny was buried after it died?

and then ask... Do YOU want to trim the teeth WEEKLY so that the bunny doesn't starve the rest of the month? Once a month trims are what vets usually recommend, but all the bunnies I've seen with bad teeth need weekly trims in order to eat.

I had to do this with the rabbit rescue gal that I work with. Helping her to see that what I wanted to do was not being cruel and mean...it was in actuality being kind. Consider this too... sometimes bunnies with bad teeth are the sweetest of the lot because they don't have the energy to be anything other than sweet. Takes energy to fight and pull away and be independent.

For what it's worth, the NY Daily News is not a good news source. Don't confuse it with something legitimate like NY times.

I'm working my way towards being a self sufficient chef, I hope to have a chunk of land that I can grow and house a garden and a poultry/rabbit farm.
I love knowing where my food comes from and what goes into it, the large scale meat industry is a disturbing practice in my veiw, turned me into a vegetarian for a few years.
I was so happy to find this forum where people don't make me feel evil for keeping rabbit's for my pets dinner and my own.
Thank you.
